How many of you are using gplink under Linux?

Hello,

I'm finally in the gp32 community and I find it great;) I'd like to give the people here sth in return for all the homebrewn stuff that I like.
Since I'm using Linux, the utility of choice for GP32 transfers is gplink. It nevertheless lacks many features : installation of fxe via fpk files, more display modes for info command (equiv of -h option of ls, for instance), ability to transfer files whose size is more than 4Megs, error recovery with problem description, progress bar during transfers (win$ utility does it), ability to transfer directories, wildcard recognition for names on GP side (at the moment, cannot say gplink get GPMM/*), a GUI which is more sophisticated (gtk or qt, with DnD support), handling of spaces in names (should convert spaces to underscores IMHO).

This is the reason why I would like to improve it and maybe to add a more sophisticated GUI (probably gtk) in the future.

Coul you tell me what gplink you are using (with or without the GUI) and list the drawbacks you think it has along with the advantages.

I'm also contacting Mike Dawson (gplink's author) on that point.

Thanks for your help,

Vincent

I never use the gplink gui 'cos I love the command line :) so for me the main priorities are - large file support (card readers don't work with my smc's for some reason), and directory/wildcard transfers. Get those working and you'll make me a very happy man :D

I agree with woogal. I use gplink from the command line also. I'd like to add that 'TAB' completion for file and directory names on the gp32 itself would be nice also.

Need some much better details from 'info' command too. Would be great to run a '$gplink info GPMM/' for example and get a 'du' style return just for GPMM/. Currently its pretty difficult to find out which folder is greedily hogging all your precious storage space.

I guess I would use a GUI if it was nice on the eyes but still small. Some key advantages to it would be drag and drop and previews.

Sounds good! Im suprised that linux isnt supported more, considering both linux and the gp32 seem to be going for the same open source type of platform. Also woogal, i see there are updates lined up for bob the amazing lemon, hows it going? cos u know that lazy reader has seen an update lately so just wonderin if ull b workin on btal any time. its a wicked game!

Yes, an update for btal is coming soon. I've been really tied up with work just lately, but as you've noticed I've finally found time to do some gp32 coding again. I'm aiming to get the level editor released fairly soon and then I'll improve the actual game.

I'd loveto see geepee link with a gui that does copy and paste for file transfers. Although the most important thing is just getting files above 4 meg to work.

Hello guys,

Thanks for your replies! Glad to see some of you are carrying the true power of Linux with them all along!

Ok for the missing features. I will then concentrate on the following points (priority order)
1. Large file transfers (more than 4 Megs)
2. Installation of fpks and other GP32 archives (should not be too hard since there is already gpex to extract these. I just hope I can get the sources to port it to Linux)
3. A more precise size usage lister. I already have a simple -h flag (as in ls) for the info command on the way

For the others, it will depend on how hard they are to implement. I also love to have autocompletion for the gp32 side.

I still have to learn more about usb but the code from Mike Dawson (original author) is pretty clean so I figure that tweaking can be the motto for some time.

I'll let all of you know how this is all progressing.

Thanks for your support and long live the GP32,

Vince, from France

Hiya,

Even better than in order : Mike Dawson (original author) replied and told me that a patch has already been sent to him to enable large file transfer and a progress indicator!

The generous donator of the patch is Ulrich Hecht who seem to be a very good coder (google hit with his name told me he is a suse developer along with being involved in the mplayer development). Thanks a lot Ulricht!

The patch is not finalized yet (still some problems according to Mike) but this will give me a very good starting point while I'm learning more about USB.

Cheers,

Vince
