I've been looking throughout the internet, researching everything about the GP2x. I probably went to over 20 different boards seeing what opinions people had about it.

After all my research, I decided to get one.

I found an offer on ebay that I couldn't pass up, just $90.
The only problem is, its a first edition version, and from my research, I know its gonna have a few problems.

I heard if I just upgrade the firmware to the current version, alot of the joysticks problem will be fixed.

I also know if I order a joystick cap it will help alot to.

I know I should get a power adapter

Are the above statements true? And what else should I do to maximize my gp2x?

The cap is definitely something you want to change. The firmware update is HIGHLY recommended. A power adapter is a great thing if you want to play at home (near an outlet) and not worry about batteries. One thing I think you are missing is the Tv-Out adapter. This is a MUST in my personal opinion. Not only will you be able to play your DivX/XviD movies on your TV, but who can pass up emulation TV Outted? And 90 beans is a great deal BTW.

It won't do anything to the joystick at all. The Mk2 version of the GP2X has physically rotated the stick to make cardinal directions easier to hit instead of diagonals.

Definitely. GP2X.co.uk sell them for a quid or so.

$90 is really a fantastic deal!

The whole reason why I wanted a 2x is because its handheld, but I never thought about being able to play DivX on my tv, thats sweet

Are there any major mods that I'm forgeting about that would give me faster framerates or anything like that?

Edit: yeah, I'm hoping its in good condition, you never know on ebay

Hmm, interesting.

Dead Zone does exist, however its cause is disputed. May be fixed through hardware mod or new firmware depending.

craigix said the dead zone was reduced in the Mk2, but I assumed it was a hardware fix...

You may need a resistor mod to get rid of nasty lines on your screen. EvilDragon *might* be able to help. Have a go with the LCD tweaker first though.

There's nothing you can do to improve the framerates. The LCD tweaker program will also allow you to change the CPU speed, so you can have a go at seeing how high your Gp2x will do. There's no difference between the models in terms of speed, some are GP2Xs are faster regardless of being FE, Mk1 or Mk2. It depends how lucky you are. And at *that* price, you sound lucky!

You'll have more questions soon, I'm sure! A handy tip is to use autoruns to set the LCD settings for individual programs. Search for 'autorun.gpu'.

I was watching that one. So you're the guy who bought it? :)

If it was the same one, it was an "Untested, as-is" auction so I hope it works when you get it! I always wonder about those so let us know how it goes!

Yeah I know, I didnt want to go much above $100 for it, just in case it doesn't work.

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get my money back anyway

Heres a problem

The 2x I ordered came with a 128 mb sd, a case and nothing else

So I'm missing the startup CD that with the usb driver and all that good stuff, where can I download everything? Specificly the usb driver

All the apps, games, emulators etc. are at the archive

I don't know anything about the drivers, using mac os x here.

Edit: *Sees 'Blobby Volley' ported after clicking the link* Woot! :D

You're not missing much. A lot didn't get the CD sent with theirs and several of us that did can't read it :)

There's nothing on the CD that can't be downloaded off the link above.
