While I never bothered with getting a GP32, the device has always fascinated me because of its powerful emulating capabilities and so, when the GP2X was announced, I was very much looking forward to it. Two weeks ago I read Craig’s much informative review on the GP2X’s current state and was blown away by how much things had changed since its release, and thus I ordered one @ eBay which should arrive this coming week.

Now I would like to know how I can prepare myself for the arrival of my unit - to get the most out of it the same day that I redeem it at the post office. I’ve already downloaded the emulators and games that I’m interested in, and I have a pair of 2400mah rechargeable batteries ready as well as a 2Gb SD-card on the way. What more can I do? I was mainly thinking about how to format the card – what directories needs to be created and where everything goes?

Stuff I’ve downloaded:

DrMD
GnGeo
MAME
OutCaST
Reminiscence (along with Flashback for DOS)
ScummVM
Star Control 2/Ur-Quan Masters
Payback Demo

Any input on the subject is appreciated!

make folders in the memory card - emulators, games, apps
just read through all of the emulators readme's and see how to install them to your sd, usualy just copy the files into their own folder
also copy all your roms to the place where the readme says.
make sure you get a card reader and format it in windows in the fat32 format.
then just sit by the door every morning, watching every van pass and jump up and shout "yes its here!", then see its a bt van and go back to your house with sad look on your face

A pair of batteries? You might want to have at least two sets, so one can charge while you are playing.

You're not going to want to put it down and wait for them to charge.

Thanks freddy, though I've already read the readme-files on every emulator and game I've downloaded so far - I'll be sure to look at them again to make sure that I didn't miss out on any vital information! :)

I bought the power supply as well, so no worries ^_^

Another emulator nut. Just what you guys need.
Oh how I wish that I was skilled at programming, but sadly I'm not :( Well you can never have too many testers now can you? :p;)

whats wrong with emulators?
just 5000+ homebrew games on 1 console
its not as if we dont like homebrew games as well
there are some nice ones that out atm, still waiting for smash gp update

Congratulations ConraDargo :D

Rest assured you've done the right thing.
It's as if the little monster has attached itself to my arm.........

Just remember most of the programs are case sensistive when it comes to looking for files and directories, usually lower case for all. And some emu's can't read zipped files, apart from that it's a piece of cake.

Enjoy

There's no going back now, you'll have to reschedule the rest of the year!!!!!!

Yes, you are right, we need internet trolls like yourself so much more.
And also. Every village needs a village idiot too!

Run from the flames!!  :D

I would suggest readying Qtopia and GPE (I mean Opera and Dillo, AKA a full-on PDA? Must try app :)) and getting some neat Divx movies, some nice Music Videos are good.

I also like the Mystery Science Theater 3000 public-domain films shared over eDonkey (on a private server, you will be blacklisted if you don't kill overnet)

It is called the Digital Archive Project (DAP), each film is ~700mb but the quality on many is really good.

You *might* have enough room for one on your card, I know on my 1GB card that thing didn't leave much over.

If you are waiting, why not try Auto Gordian Knot (AGK) on a movie, about 300 to 400 is pretty good quality at 320x240, just select 320 and preserve aspect ratio for the screen size, a 16x9 movie is like 176 or something pixels the other way, If you have a capture card you can get a half-hour cartoon into 50mb @15fps :).

And if you squeeze the quality down a bit - say if the cartoon doesn't have too much action - you'll probably manage to get it into about 30mb. Not that it matters too much for the 2x, but hey, every few mb saved is more space for other stuff to go on the same card.

The thing to be most careful of is how much you put on, I think, actually. If you put on 200 games, you'll (unless you're very very strong-willed) play through 25 of them for 5 minutes, find one, play it through to the end, and then delete the whole 200 and start over with a different set, and possibly another emu.

If you want some good advice, try putting about 10-20 games on at any one time, say a couple from each genre (depending on your mood), and you'll probably find that's more than enough - and that you get bored a LOT slower!

Good advice. People that have 5000+ roms on two 1GB sd cards, you should try following that. Then you will realize how fun it is to really -play- a game.

Oh yes, ConraDargo, you do already know that the joystick is very hard to get used to due to its poor quality, the GP2X casing feels cheap, and almost anything you do can brick your GP2X (render it useless), right?

For the sake of mankind, can somebody finally band this troll JaqMs? He is obviously not interested in the gp2x or the community beyond insulting and badmouthing a system that apparently doesn't work for him. Get a psp but stfu and get lost!!!

Thanks nubie, I'll be sure to look those applications up - just downloaded GEP, looks cool :)

That is a good advice yes, and one that I agree with. That's how most ppl trash their consoles after having them flashed, chipped or whatever (whether it be retro or brand new games they're playing). No need to worry though - I'll only be playing like half a dozen games or so.

I've heard about the joystick not being very comfortable but that it's become better since they replaced it?

The joystick is fine - you get used to it - and the latest cap is comfortable enough. Firmware upgrading is the only way you'll be able brick your GP2X, and that generally won't happen unless you switch it off whilst doing so or run out of battery life (tip: buy a PSU).

2.0 firmware will already be preloaded, so you don't have to worry about upgrades for a while. And the GP2X may feel cheap, but that's the trade-off for it being light.

Here's a true noob-questions for which I appologice that I must ask: do all emulators go into mnt/sd/ or does it depend on the application - will the root directory do for some?

If you drop it, do not panic. I once dropped mine in a 7/11 parking lot. After threatening to sue the 7/11 man for a faulty parking lot, I took a look at my GP2X. The metal tong sticking out in the battery slot for the - side of the battery was flattened. That was it.

Almost every emulator has a readme.txt file or an update.txt file or instructions blahblah. :) Read em. I haven't hit one yet that didn't tell me where to place files for proper functionality(and I've loaded and deleted a ton of stuff on mine(128MB SD card - 4GB on the way)) :)
