Best Videogame Plot

As for other games with good storylines, Planescape: Torment. Hands down still my favourite RPG and should be very affordable. The graphic is not up to current standard (the game is pretty old) but I did not feel that this detracts from the game. I love it to death.

Planescape rocks. It's one of those really, really good RPGs and I have problems playing most other RPGs after I played Torment because most other stories are so predictable and shallow.
Snatchers plot was also very good. It's one of those few games where you really feel like playing a movie. I like it better than Kojimas Metal Gear series. The MSX version should be playable on the GP2x or GP32.

Funnily enough, I hadn't read the latest VGCats before posting that. I'd read the 'Which princess?' one though.

It was more sparked by incessant Mario Bros. DX playing,

I personally prefer the MG(S) series, but Snatcher is really good too. The Sega CD version is considered the definitive one as it was the most complete (it was also the only version with a proper English release) but the MSX one should be enough to get most people into it. I'd kill for an English version of Policenauts, though. For a while I was actually considering learning Japanese just to play that game.

I enjoyed the plot of Half-life, even though it was only there to keep the action going. The thought of scientists going too far was a popular theme behind a lot of the old monster movies.

Another really good plotline was in the game Cultures 2. A Viking named "Bjarni" gets a dream about fighting the destroer of the world and sets out on a voyage to face his destiny, meeting other heros on his way. Strategy game, but the story is fed along the campaign.

I actually enjoyed metal gear solid 2's story.
You're probably the only one. :p

Seriously though, I thought it was good until the end, then it got a little too convoluted. I could have done without the 10 minute codec conversation before the fight with Solidus. I think MGS 1 and 3 were much better overall but 2 wasn't as bad as a lot of people made it out to be.

that's why I said "I 'actually' enjoyed MGS2" :p

Ya, I agree it got a little fucked up at the end, but it was overall really good, and the game itself was fantastic imo.

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus (and yes, they are connected)

the story is just shown so perfectly, I can't imagine these games being told any better than they were. Like a good novel, the story has many themes, symbols, and deeper meanings. These games deserve to be analyzed and discussed much like a great piece of literature (hemmingway comes to mind).

For days (and maybe even weeks) after finishing these games I couldn't forget about their endings and I couldn't stop thinking about their story. I kept going over it in my head and coming up with different explanations for it and finding different themes and symbols throughout it.

The story in these games shows that video games are a legitimate form of modern art.

Other games with good stories:
Final Fantasy 8 - I loved this story, even though I didn't like some of the characters
Sword of Mana - I never hear anything about this game, but I enjoyed it, despite its flaws
Lunar Legend - I really can't remember why I liked this so much, but I did
Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 - I was amazed by the quality of the story in these games, but it is somewhat dragged down by the constand mini-stories of each world

While it's only a puzzle/brain teaser/internet game, "Missing: Since January" has a really creepy story behind it. It's about a serial killer that gives you clues to the whereabouts of a woman and a journalist that are missing. In a couple places watching the in-game video, I almost forgot it was only a game.

VERY good immersion.

I rented Shadow of the Colossus recently and I have no idea why you think this game has a good story. It only says "This girl is dead, go kill some giants to revive her".
Never played Ico so I can't comment on that one.

FFX. The storyline was genius, I honestly don't think sqeen are gonna have beaten it with 12.

If all you can see in a story is what is "says" then you aren't ready for true art, go back to simple stories that spoon feed you everything.

Also, from what you said, it sounds like you never finished the game or even got half way through. Until you finish the game, you really have no idea how great the story really is. I remember reading The Sun Also Rises by Hemmingway. After the first 50 pages or so, I wanted to quit reading it. I thought it was boring and pointless. Up until finishing the novel I still felt the same way. However, after finishing it, I started thinking about it more deeply and I now love that novel.

Many people will read The Sun Also Rises and never really understand it. The same thing can be said for Shadow of the Colossus.
