Just got the Sandisk 2 gig and I'm not sure if it's faulty. Formatted to Fat32 in Card reader no problem but when I transfer files to it it takes an absolute age, like 5 to 10 minutes.
Single large files are no problem like say Quakex but small files like say the timidity drivers take minutes.
I'm dreading sticking MAME on.
What's more I'm noticing micro pauses in Pbdoom and hexen that were never there before.
I have an old unbranded cheap crap 128meg SD and that's perfect in every way bar the size.
Am I just not doing something here. Does a setting need to be set in Winxp or something?

You can always go into device manager and change the options for the card reader to "Optimize for performance" rather than "Optimize for quick removal". The first does require you to notify Windows before removing the card, as it'll cache the write requests.

Thanks for that but it's still no better. I just can't understand why a large file like say Doom.wad can take a second to move to the card. But small files like a text file or something like 70kb also takes a second to move onto the SD.

I've just put 1 gig's worth of mame roms on and it took over 25 minutes to transfer. Does that sound normal?

It sounds like it has a poor seek rate, which is suprising for what is basically flash memory.

FYI, to write a small file you generally update the directory part of the disk, followed by the data sectors, and finally the file allocation table. For a large file you do exactly the same, but just write more data sectors. If the card is taking a long time to change where you want to write to, it would explain why small files take just as long as large ones.

well that is suprising then as it's a Sandisk SD card. Same one as gp2x.co.uk sell

I'm having issues where my files are transferring to the SD thru the USB at a USB1.1 speed
(this sounds like what you are experiencing)

When I look at my hardware settings in Windows for that particular USB connection, I do NOT
have a USB2.0 connection.

I've used various SD card thru USB and they do the same thing.

Your smaller card actually copies FAST?

Install and update mobo drivers should get you 2.0 usb and yes the 2 gig Sandisk is rubbish. Avoid.

I've just bought a PNY 2GB card and noticed that it was quite a bit slower than my 512 SanDisk one, but I just put it down to it being a cheaper card.
I was actually kicking myself for not buying a SanDisk one: now I see they're also slowish so I don't feel so bad now. Misery loves company ;)

That's good to know your suffering too with a different make (sorry, but you know hwta I mean)
