At the moment I own a GP32 Blu and I am very content with a lot of emulators for this device. with the exception of mame emulation; sound is not that good and a lot of games play choppy. However, I like Mame very much (I own to Mame cabinets, one has an original arcade monitor) and I am willing to buy a GP2X just for mame emulation. So, can someone tell me if it is worth the money (I mean, is there a big difference in mame emulation performance)? And what about the quality of the other GP2X emulators?

I would not recommend you getting a gp2x for Mame emulation. Although it is nice with the emulation performance being a little better than on the gp32 (better framerate, sound experience is quite similar), it's not the gp2x's killer-app in my opinion. It could be in the near future though!
Genesis, c64 emulation is of supirior quality, although the experience can be pretty similar on both the gp2x and the gp32. Littlejohn on the gp32 is a very good nes emulator, there's none that compares on the gp2x yet.

Anyways, there's a lot of good coders creating wonderfull applications and emulators all the time. New games (even commercial ones) are being created for the gp2x. An interesting scene. This should be enough to get you interested in it ;)

It really depends on which games you want to play - if you want to play the older stuff it's fantastic - I'd get to play Ghosts and Goblins alone! If you want to play more recent stuff it'll struggle a bit more. Quite obvious I suppose, but it's just like MAME on the GP32 with more power....

My 2 cents:

Time Pilot '84, Marble Madness and several others run much smoother on my '2X than on my GP32. These were games from my mis-spent youth and it's a blast playing them again ... for free ... nearly perfectly emulated on a hand-held system.

For me, it's worth having a '2X for the improved speed & overall performance.

(Plus there's the benefit of all the other fine emulators/homebrew available as well ;))

Alsmost every game or app for the GP2X needs to be configured so it'll work nicely. For some people that's a big problem, cause they just want to download it and play it at full speed, 44100 kHz sound etc. etc. but for me that isn't a problem. I'm intrested in how everything works so this way I learn every day about the GP2X. And it keeps you busy a little bit :)

:) OK, thank you all for the usefull replies. At the moment I am very pleased with the emulation quality on my GP32, and I think they are not yet (a lot) better on the GP2X. I know Franxis is improving Mame on GP2X more and more. And because Mame would be the only reason to by a GP2X. I will waot another few months or so to buy one. Perhaps by that time also the technical problems of the GP2X are solved like I believe the USB connection with a pc.

By the way, my alltime Arcade favourites are Galaga, Crazy Kong, Phoenix, Scramble, 1941, Pacman, Moon cresta, QBert, Pooyan, etc.
