If you do buy (I recommend you do, and if anything, I'm just an obsessive/casual user) buy from the nearest shop possible (i.e: avoid Lik-Sang if you do not live in Asia), as there is always a chance that SOMETHING will be wrong with your system, and you'll have to send it back to get fixed.
The flaw in mine was hard to pin down, as it does not adversely affect anything but firmware flashing (basically, a bad block in an inconvenient place in the NAND). It seems stupid to send it back to Lik-Sang when I'm still having loads of fun with all the emulators and all the other cool software for this system. Plus, helping some of the devs test their new software is cool too, in my opinion.
I say buy! There's plenty to have fun with. But buy domestic, just in case.

Firmware? Well, since FW 1.4.0 it works nice (except for movie player freeze).

Though I prefer Art's U-Boot and Open2x. Compatible, nicer looking - and the gp2x is ready to use 7 seconds after I switch it on :)
Woah.. back up.. Open2x is ready for use? Did I miss anything ? Or is that Oddbots kernal?

Well, it's not final yet, but I didn't have any problems with it.
Can be found on Art's page.

Though I would not recommend using U-Boot yet - unless you have access to a JTAG, cause it's still a bit incompatible with some SD-Cards.

Open2x however should be safe to use.

well this topic has put me off buying one, is the joystock so bad then!!! sort of key really innit <_<

I don't know about the joystock, but the joystick is alright, I don't have any problems playing games with it. Sometimes I get annoyed, but very rarely.

Its not normally bad enough to put people off buying one if you show them a GP2X first.

I wouldnt put it all on the joystick .

I would wait for a good community firmware (yes i know Cramfs rocks but a menu relacement and stuff )

I would also wait until most of the emulators come out of beta and have better game support .

These things should not take long , It all really depends on how much of a noob you are , i would not reccomend the GP2X for noobs plain and simple , not yet .

Sometimes the problem isn't really the joystick. For example, has anybody tried playing the "Crazee Man" game that was recently released? I just cannot get that guy to go where I want... it "feels" as if the joystick is not responding right, but it works fine in other games.

I don't mind the joystick too much. The shape of the cap is unfortunate and my thumb slips off sometimes, but getting a new cap or putting some stickier rubber on it seems to help with that issue.

Some of that could be software related. If a "case 2" type configuration is not used you will get a diagonal bias. "case 2" helps to minimize that.

All good points and the joystock :p looks like a matter of opinion, i`m no noob been in IT most of my life so know my around this type of thing, i also owned a gp32 so i might purchase one. The amiga emulator is the biggest pull at the moment might wait to critical iron's out most of the things, i`m waiting for save state and see if he can get cyclone working.

then off to order me a gp2x at the point huzzah!!

how does the joystick compare to the gp32 by the way? is it of the same standard or worse

The specifics of the joystick have been discussed at length elsewhere but essentially the stick on the 2X is fine but the cap that comes with it is very poor.

There are a number of ways of resolving this. DaveC's replacement cap works for me and makes the whole thing much more enjoyable.

However there are any number of other mods discussed on threads herein, a quick search should turn up the info you need.

That's not entirely true. The joystick appears to have a diagonal bias, which is no good for emulation.

i'm also very intrested in buying one but i'm still not convinced in getting one due to all the problems i read about it, are the current problems really that bad and if so is it due to the firmware.cause if it is upgrading the firmware later on would just solve the problems right ? and then i could have some fun with it till newer firmwares are released. I might even try to pick up development for it since i used sdl already on windows it shouldn't be that hard just need to learn some c/c++ but i can understand whats going on by reading some sources.
also from what i understand they are at revions 2 for the moment when exactly did rev2 come out and what are the diffrences in rev2 with rev1 ? is it just updated firmware or are there other things changed as well like the problems with the audio jack ? when would rev 3 be out.

update:

well i couldn't wait an just ordered one :D

There are really no problems with the gp2x that are 'deal-breakers', just small irritations. Like the joystick-- it's not ideal but you get used to it FAST, and with some smart programming it isn't that big an issue. The headphone jack is weird but once you learn to just put it in 75% of the way and not ALL the way it works fine. My old CD player took more effort than that to get working. The screen 'scanline' issue is barely noticable and 30 seconds in the CPU/LCD tweaker application will take care of it. So on and so forth.

Could you be a bit more specific, please? :)

I've tried to find it on Art's page, but I wasn't been able to achieve it :(

Please, could you give us a link? :)

Regards
