I've just installed redhat 9 but I selected the wrong drivers for my monitor(it's pretty old). if I boot up linux now, my monitor won't show me anything..

Is there any way too change the drivers outside linux, i was thinking of using the command line thingie but I'm a total n00b

you can boot right into the command line thingy without starting your GUI. do you have a bootdisk? When i installed linux i messed around with my Gforce drivers for 3 days before i had them working. stupid gforce... :p

ok, after your computer boot up and everything is loaded and the screen is blank press ALT+F3 so you'll change to a text mode terminal

Same here. Although I have to say, next thing I do is erase that friggin' pile of cr*p that calls itself SuSE Linux 8.1 Pro and install Adamantix before I go bald with anger.

btw, has anybody had any success with Phantasy Star 2, 3 or 4 on the GP32 under GenesisMU? :( All the ROMs I could find crashed or rebooted my GP32... no fair... :(

that alt/f3 thingie didn't work.. i wrote down some info:

GRUB version 0.93 (639k lower / 261056k upper memory)

Red Hat Linux (2.4.20-8)
Dos

boot, edit, modify kernel arguments, command-line

if I choose linux it just normally boots, ok ok ok ok ok ok, and then when it is supposed to load the gui the monitor goes blank.

Try with Ctrl+Alt+F3 instead of just Alt+F3 as you are inside X (Alt+F? works only if you are in text mode).

ctrl+alt+f3 worked, but i can't type anything. the mouse works(i can select nothing) and if i press ctrl+alt+f7 it returns to the gui <_<

The screen should show you a Login: prompt and you should be able to type. (Does the CapsLock key toggle the led?. Maybe you have a problem with the keyboard)

If this doesn't work you can try to press Ctrl+Alt+backspace from GUI it should kill your X server but I don't know if it will be "restarted" again; if not, you will land into text mode and may be able to log into the system.

If this doesn't work try to send parameter S to kernel when in GRUB (I don't remember how exactly is it done in GRUB but it has a nice interface so it shouldn't be so hard.

S is for "Single mode" I think that runlevel should neither start XDM nor X server.

Good luck.

thanks, that worked. i had to press ctrl+alt+backspace and then ctrl+alt+F3.
I have been able to log in as root now, but I still can't figure out how to change my monitor drivers

I've found the xf86config thingie now, it was in /etc/X11 .
I've opened it with Vi but I have no idea wich settings i should use(I've got a crappy 14" targa monitor). and i don't know how to save in Vi :p

If you want a simpler text editor try pico or nano (I can never remember how to save in vi either - too much time using emacs does that to the brain).

You can also try doing 'XFree86 -configure' as root. That should try and detect things correctly and dump out an xf86config file for you.
