i have an old dell 450mhz etc etc with an added in soundcard ( very well supported in all os's etc). Basically i just want it 2 automatically boot up + play mp3's with little input from me. It wont be networked it will just have its own collection of mp3's around 5gbs of mp3's will be held on it (only 6gb hard drive). So is this possible. Would it probably be done on a linux kernel or something. Could it be made so that i can boot just off a cd ?? + then it will just play the mp3's on the hard drive. Could i keep the file system as fat 32 or ntfs like this ? i would really love a setup like this other wise this old pc is headed for the bin. I desperately DONT want to have an monitor plugged into it. And preferably no keyboard / mouse but if i have 2 i have 2 :(

i have no experience in compiling my own linux kernel i have only occasionally used linux as well :(

Another option instead of using Linux would be using MSDOS. My own Arcade PC (attached to a JAMMA cabinet) boots with a simple menu that lets me choose MAME, MP3 or SNES. When I don't respond it automaically switches to the MP3 player. Everything you named in your post is very well possible in MSDOS. Without having to attach a monitor, keyboard or mouse. Give it a thought.
