Sandisk 1 Or 2 Gb? Ultra Or Not To?

As mentioned in another thread, it might be cheaper to order a sd card individually.

However, I need some advice on this issue as well. And oh yes I have searched, alot.

Seems like there is a risk that if I buy a 2 gb card it might not work?? That's kind of nasty, considering the amount of money these slices of plastic cost. If you were to order a card tomorrow what would you choose from the ones below:

Sandisk 1 gb
Sandisk 1 gb Ultra II
Sandisk 2 gb
Sandisk 2 gb Ultra II

Oh, also if anyone has any good tips for good stores in the UK that would be appreciated too!

Thanks

Nelson

Speed really won't matter in the cases of SD cards and the GP2X, since the data is usually only read once in the initial loading. Even with streaming media through mp3/AVI playback, it wouldn't matter, unless the AVI was encoded unusually large.

Also, 2 GB cards work. You might have formatting problems on the PC, but they work. I have one and am using it.

I can tell you right now though, regular Sandisk SD's are quite slow, but can be very cheap. If you have patience, then go ahead and buy it.

There are other alternative brands you can look out for, that I know will be good:

Kingston (with lifetime warranty)
Sandisk (Slow but reliable)
RiData

Heard it was good:
A-DATA (they have a 4 GB one, and that has also been tested and it works)

Interesting, so even for movies I would be covered with a slow card is what you're saying.

cool

But that doesn't matter, right? I mean do you notice the slowness at all in using the device? If not, who cares.

hmm, I always presumed Sandisk were the most reliable as they're everywhere. Maybe I should do some more research then.

thanks!

I've got the Sandisk 2gb Ultra II. Main problem was the initial format in Windows, even when using a brand new compatible Sandisk card reader. It treated it as a 1gb card. Had to go through some weird process in Control Panel to sort it out. Now it's fine. Windows XP has some problem with 2gb SD cards sometimes.

I didn't have a problem with card reader and XP Pro.

I have a Sandisk 1 GB and a Sandisk 2G Ultra II and both work like a charm!

2GB set me back about $90 American.

So did you notice any difference between the cards? anything?

1GB is surprisingly little space even if you have been used to 128 SMC for the GP32, so if you got the money get a 2GB.

I wouldn't pay the extra for the ultra though, but maybe you can get one of those normal SDs that can be written faster (usually they are a lot quicker reading than writing), as copying movies and such can take quite a bit on those slow SDs.

About the speed, the only time where you'll experience a difference is when copying files onto your SD card, it usually takes longer with slower ones. Movie and music playback should run just fine on any card that is supported :)

My Sandisk 1GB often gets killed when I put it into the GP2X while it's turned on (even with write protection enabled)
it shows no files and when I put it back into my cardreader XP asks me if I want
to format it even tho I copied files onto it just a minute ago!? :( Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, my digital camera doesn't have that problem with the same card. ... My "Klick" 256MB SD card works just fine ... any idea what the problem could be?

Yeah, the Ultra II reads/writes faster in the card reader than the regular 1GB. Plus, for some reason, it was cheaper than the normal 2GB, so that really sealed the deal. :D

A-Data works great, I have a 2 gig A-Data I got at newegg and it works great. Also have a couple 1 gig cards of various brands and a 512 Sandisk. You pretty much need multiple cards if you want to be able to play a variety of things without having to wipe the card out and start over each time you want to play something else. But a big one is fine if you only have a few roms from each console (I'd rather have a large assortment of roms to play with, so I have a MAME card, a NES and Genesis card, etc.).

In a couple of years people may have large collection of SD or similar cards just like they had large collections of diskettes in the 80s! But for that they yet need to become a whole lot cheaper and then sold in bulk packs of 10 or 20 :p

 "I'm going out to buy a pack of ten"

I got a Viking 512. It's not enough but I had it really cheap.
I'm thinking of buying me a 1 or 2Go too, but it's really expensive stuff.
I like the Sony idea of giving to customers a 32Mb card

Not saying everyone does but a quite few have reported this problem both on these forums on the reviews I've read for some 2gb SD cards at Amazon.

I own both a 2GB Ultra II SD Card and a 2GB A-DATA Turbo SD 150X. Both of them work without any problems. I do use it, however, with a card reader in Windows XP Home Edition (without any trouble).

I have a 1gb sandisk ultra II SD Card, it works like a charm! very fast imo.

My GP2X boots in less than 20 seconds without fast firmware, go figure.

I am now getting a 2gb sandisk ultra II from ebay for $90 total.
