I think that the fact that the kernel source is now released deserves to be Slashdotted. The fact that it was not released was mentioned on Slashdot and personally I always like to hear how news evolves after it "hit the news".

Unfortunately I am to busy right now to write a propper /. text.

Of course we are still waiting for U-BOOT and MPlayer.

I think I'd wait for U-Boot, MPlayer and BusyBox (I don't think we have that) source before we go anywhere near Slashdot. Don't want anyone else talking about finding GPL lawyers.

I'd suggest waiting too. Once EVERYTHING is sorted out drawing the attention of Slashdot would be good for the GP2X community, but if it was done right now there would be another round of aggression due to the fact that GPH is still not completly in compliance.

there will be a day when we have EVERYTHING released? mmmm i'm not so sure. Some day of this someone will slashdot that, and i'll be happy, because without our PRESSURE (and of someone of FSF) neither the source we own now will be ours.

It's not really exciting slashdot news, it is just an advert.
That's why they call them slashvertisements ;)

Seriously tho, if it wasn't for the 1st /. story I wouldn't have a gp2x. I owe a lot to GPH's non-understanding of the GPL.

Yeah I bought my gp2x from the slashdot piece as well. I had read about it before but when I found out they were finally released and taking orders I signed up a month or two before the new year.

errm bad idea, GP2X has a long way to go before it *should* get /. its not exactly in compliance. If it is /. it will be for non-compliance not complience

Edited for you :)

What's dotslash? And GP2X/GPH has already been on /. twice.

The people who are not interested in the GP2X, and use slashdot.org as their primary news source, currently think that the source was released weeks ago. That's because there was a SlashBack followup on 18 January to the first posting. They linked to this GizmosForGeeks post, which mentioned the creation of http://source.gp2x.de , and came to the conclusion that all was resolved.

It should be noted that source.gp2x.de, through no fault of their own, is still empty. It should also be noted that, the last time I checked, the Subversion repository where the source for the 1.4 firmware was "released" has been locked-down (password protected), and there has still been no official announcement of release of the source. Luckily, a lot of us grabbed the source as soon as we could, perhaps foreseeing just such an eventuality.

All in all, I'd say that a new SlashDot posting is not yet a good idea.

Does anyone know for sure if there are source code changes to busybox, uboot, and mplayer? I'm aware they've updated the binaries but these could be recompiles for various reasons.

:(

Thanks (to all) for the feedback. No /. for now.

MPlayer has definitely been updated, as the one they've provided already (gplayer) is unfinished and doesn't compile.

The 1.4 source is still available from the file archive.
