I thought it was fairly amusing, as far as 'your mother' jokes go.

I concur

Just like things are rated 100 pounds but can really take about 200. ;)

The joystick will only last 200,000 use oh my god what have I bought!

I'm more concerned about getting hold of a card reader at the moment. I'll worry about the joystick when I can get something working.

It's like the standard "This SD card can be removed and inserted 10,000 times"

Don't really worry about it. The only concerns you should have about the joystick is don't mash it or drop it or something.

Your mother is rated for 100 uses too, but she's lasted much longer obviously.

well ninjak, I'm at 150 uses of your mom right now, and she seems to be going pretty well still.... lol j/k

no harm intended :p

I really want to believe that my gp2x will be holding together long enough for it to work 100% correctly. multiple stick failures isn't looking good, though--maybe that's why they put that cap on it in the first place, to keep us from overusing it.

I'm fairly gentle with my unit, (heh heh) but this does scare me.
it's always got to be something with this system, doesn't it?

I wouldn't go that far. The zodiac stick is very prone to failure. I think you should get plenty of time out of the GP2X stick if you treat it well. The good news is that it is a $6.00 part if you need to replace it. I have 3 sticks now as spare parts.

Is it very hard to replace a joystick if you're technically impaired? It probably would need soldering, but I'm sure I'd just burn the whole unit and myself if I did that.
If you'd go to a hardware store with a joystick and a gp2x, do you think they'll replace something like that?

I'm hesitating to buy a gp2x, but I'm getting afraid of all these bad rumors about the joystick. I'm sure it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but still...

lol... gross... like I said I wasn't being serious

you're gonna be (and already are) a hell of a coder when they let you out of that prison known as public ed and let you get to college... lol, I wish I'd had the kind of headstart you've got, spoon. I'd actually not be getting my rear kicked by college.

At risk of going back on-topic, soldering a 10 pin or so thing isn't really that hard - just buy a crappy PC board and some random components to practice on from radio shack, or even tear apart an old broken piece of electronics. Yeah, you'll probably make a mess of things the first couple times, but it won't take long to get good at soldering/unsoldering say, a 8 pin chip, and the joystick assembly won't be much worse. One of those spring loaded solder vacuums makes life a lot easier too.

Plus, you will have picked up a marginally useful skill in the process. Personally, I have a hard time trying to learn things without adequate motivation, so I kinda like those fix-it-yourself opportunities.

I remember how I worried about SMCs limited amount of writes when I used my GP32.

Of my many many years of using 1 SMC it never once showed any signs of stopping.

Relax people, it's a serving suggestion, to be taking with a pinch of salt. (I am the pun master)

Because he/she got ignored in the new 1.4 firmware thread for the same question, Because he/she was too lazy to read a few posts in said thread.

I believe these figures are there for 'legal' reasons. Just like delicate clothing which says you should only dry clean. If you stick it in your washing machine it'll wash but just incase it messes up the manufacturer will say 'we warned you didn't we?' I put all my dry clean clothing in my washing machine and it washes perfectly!

You must have seen plasma TV's which have a rating of 50000 hrs or whatever the figures are. CD's are apparently supposed to last no longer than 10 years but I've got some from long before that. If your data goes missing the CD firms will just say 'we never said it will work forever!'.

1 press per second (really conservative, playing slow mo' tetris)
60 presses per minute
3,600 presses per hour
10,800 presses a day (3 hours play a day)
3,942,000 presses per year (365 days...leap year or whatever, playing EVERY DAY...must like tetris)

100,000 'standard' uses (true it does seem rather low... should be many times higher)

So... In 1 year the joystick has broken 394 times.

But then again the GP2X isn't a game machine... its a Multimedia player, so GPH says...

No need for a tough joystick. (but why would a MP3 player need more than 2 buttons on the front? and top and left and right, and select/start)

But I digress, I havent heard of any joystick failure yet. That stick will last ages (longer than those 2500 mAh NiMH batteries thats for shure).

Jeez read the threads, quite a few people are already reporting joystick issues as detailed in DaveCs joystick failure thread.

Another apologist ! I expect in the next few months many people seeking out the joystick component from Alp.

I think it really depends on people's frequency of use and what type of games they play or applications they use.

DG.
