If Only The Sources Were Avalable....

Any X-Com game.

I actually only bought UFO:Enemy Unknown because it was bundled with syndicate for less money than syndicate alone in my local game all those years ago. I ended up playing it many, many times more than syndicate.

Both great games, but X-Com was a classic that could even work ok without a mouse.

At the moment.. :) yazor I believe has done some preliminary work on remaking the LBA2 engine.

Besides, what's so great about LBA2 as opposed to the original?

Allan.

Yeah, but LBA2 is far more advanced than the original. And as for better things - well, theres more diverse environments, the 3d locations in the game, and it's generally more interesting than the original.

Deed - ScummVM supports some other games.

It'll make my day if someone say that it is possible :)

The bit in the caves with the luminous plants was just a pain in the arse.

Actually, that was one of the best parts :) You had to draw your own map in order to find the exit, if I remember well :p

Some of the ones I'd love:

Duke Nukem 1 (The DOS platformer. One of the first PC-based games I played)

Little Big Adventure 1 (Solid gameplay, great game)

Little Big Adventure 2 (Same as above, a sequel that actually improves upon the first)

The Longest Journey (One of the best adventure games ever. Would love to play on the go)

Myst and Riven (Adventure games again, but good classics and would work great on the go. Pocket PC already has them)

Blood (An interesting difference from others of it's types)

Roller Coaster Tycoon (Perhaps an implementation like openTTD.)

Starcraft (As said earlier)

Popcap games (Bejewelled, Bookworm, Alchemy et al. Great portable games)

Thats right. I did it all on squared paper, took a bloody eternity.... :p

Still got the disks somewhere.

It ran like a dream on my old Olivetti 386! :D

ufo enemy unknown's just about playable on the amiga emulator. tis a lil bit slow still and the mouse support is a tad finicky but it's definitely one to keep your eye on

You people are mad:
LBA1 > LBA2

Better storyline.

LBA2 will not happen on the GP2X. But LBA1 may. (But apparently all tried ports have been slow and buggy). :(

Still we have hope:

Long time no see, guys. It seems that several people are interested in porting LBA to the GP2X, in spanish an english forums (forii?) as well. check this:

Spanish forum

http://www.gp32spain.com/foros/showt...0&page=1&pp=15

Miguelusque, Topochan and whitehat are interesting in porting it, and they already have started to look at the Twin-e to make a GP2X port.

English Forum

http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=23912

It would be nice if anyone interested could contact those coders (I suppose they all can spek english) and maybe the task would be easier if there are more heads thinking

BTW, could I use any of the utilities for LBA to change the tiles in the game? I can't code a single line of code, but I would be interesting in redoing (that's in my free time, of course) every single tile in the game to give it a new look (maybe 32 bit colour tiles, would Twin-e support those?) maintaining the original look but aided by today's modern render solutions (MentalRay, radiosity).

Regards

Anyone who manages to get UFO working on the GP2X should be made leader of their country. No not enought dictator for life of the whole world.

How would you get past the need for a keyboard though, didn't you have to name all your bases though I suppose you could just leave the defaults in.

I managed to play it with one base named as the default but the new version of criticals emu has keyboard support which I shall be trying when I get home

LBA 1 didn't have a better storyline! LBA2 was far more interesting (come on, you get to beat up a kid on the first map!)

I don't see why LBA2 can't happen - if Yazor gets it working like he has with LBA1 then it's quite possible. The technology of it may become an issue - but there's built in features that dramatically drop the required specification (draw distance, for instance). Plus the fact it only has to work at half the resolution...

LBA1 was soooo much better. LBA2 just didnt have the same feel to it.

Oh and may I add, STRIFE! Awsome lil game that beat crappy Deus Ex at its own game years before Ion Storm even existed :D

is it incredibly farfetched to email some of those publishers, putting the idea of releasing the source? obviously on a limited basis.

perhaps they could work out an agreement with one (some) of the best dev(s) here, and pay them a small amount, and then make us pay for the resulting game. that way they wouldn't use up any more manpower, and could squeeze a bit more money from the game, especially if it was download based (no packaging costs, just website space).

just an idea, but i can see a lot of red tape getting in the way. :(

I liked LBA1's kind of rebellion feel (that so many things were against you, with only some areas safe) - but I preffered LBA2's free roaming on all the planets (except Emerald Moon, of course - but that was just awesome with the space suit).

And Subin - for most of these old games the companys are either non-existant or they don't have the Sourcecode anymore. Adeline Software (makers of LBA1 and 2) went bankrupt after LBA2 and I doubt anyone has the sourcecode to it.

An Unreal port would own, too.

I would love to play Super Mario 64, I think it's already been ported to an ARM processor (DS) so I think it would definitely be a possibilty.

There is plenty of power there for what Mario64 needs, even without a 3D chip.

Albion, definately. I WAS involved in making a replacement engine, but that's on the back, back, back, backburner. As a result I have lots of documentation on the file formats it uses if anyone wants to take up the torch? The only things missing, I think, are the events, and the monster AI. =P I emailed everyone involved about the sourcecode, btw, no luck. Nobody has a copy =(

Adventure Game Studio could be fun, too. It has a Linux port, so... why not? The creator is pretty sociable.

Or something like Amulets and Armour. OH MY GOD that game was SO fun.

Or Realms of Arkania - Blade of Destiny. D&D-like RPGs FTW! =o

Finally, Castle of the Winds. Or a clone thereof. Fun in a bottle.

*skree*

I suspect if you look at some of the more independant puplishers ie when everybody and his dog used to have a game on the go. They may not be as popular, but I bet they look sweet and play well on a GP2X. If I was thinking blue sky I'd go GTA1, but If I was to contact people I would go for "Mutant Space Bats of Doom", Which I loved and would look stunning on the GP2X, gives the author a bit of cred on with Blog/CV and he is a minor celebrity. The money made from any such venture I would suspect would be more trouble than its worth.

I dream of the sources and a workable port of "GP2X Firmware".

However, the company holding the sources are inscrutable and unknowable, so I have no idea if my dream software will ever be released.
