Windows Vista

I've been reading about Windows Vista and its system requirements and it boggled my mind. Each window is made of 150 polygons with tranparency effect, but you need 500MB memory for just the OS and requires DirectX9 graphics card with 256MB of video memory? Just running OS alone, there are 54 processes. I can't understand how come the requirement is SO high. OS-X does all that already on much worse specs. How long should we put up with terrible engineering ripoffs?

They do that so you have to buy a newer comp along with it

damn pricks!

I believe that a lower-spec version of WV is included besides the fancy one. I have a 64MB graphics card, but no worries, as I sure as hell do not plan on buying this ripoff. Windows kept on improving (that's right) up to XP. The Micro train stopped there. Next stop, Ubuntu! :)

Its always the same though isn't it. Was told the OS required 8GB's of space and that was likely to double on release. Not a challenge for todays hard drives but still what on earth do you need that much space for. As for the 512 MB RAM, I spend half my time writing batch files to turn off all the pointless memory wasteage in XP as it is.

Hopefully Vista will have no annoyingly bright standard theme this time otherwise I may go mad (or simply not buy it).

I use Ubuntu, it rocks.

If in doubt, use Linux.

Edit: There is a small screenshot of vista here so you can see there is no annoyingly bright theme.

Simple. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
It's not that easy, though. It's not like flipping channels on TV. I use pc for work and home. If all the software and services that I use upgrades to Vista leaving XP behind, I'll be forced to upgrade, although it won't happen in a few years.

Don't forget, Google uses Ubuntu, and if it's good enough for them :)

Those screenshots show that MS wants to be Apple so bad that it hurts.

Ooh I think these screens look sooo coool! Who cares about specs? ( I DO! My WinXP is already much crappier and slower than my ubuntu even with the win2k theme [i don't even have a virus or trojan ;D !] )
Tooo baad it won't come out before the end of this year ;((((

*cough* kde plasma *cough* enlightenment17 *cough* 3ddesk *cough*
Oh gawd I am so glad I use Ubuntu ;) (tough mostly using gnome 2.12)

Well, in fact there will be a XP-theme version and a fallback Win2k theme for slower computers, mirco$oft is not completely insane... they just noticed there is some uber-company called "google" so they can't fool around that much anymore.

I really can't see too much that is signifigantly different so far, and if I'm not very much mistaken, "Windows flip" already exists- there is a Microsoft "power toy" that adds this functionality to XP...

Anyway, isn't this going to be for 64bit processors only? Or was that a misconception on my behalf?

A while back I read a bit about it at microsoft.com... they were claiming it could boot in seconds, which is impressive, but then on my computer XP boots in "seconds" but then spends a minute or two actually getting fully up to a useable speed.

In all likelihood, I will never (need to) be bothered with this though in the foreseeable future, so no worries for me ;)

EDIT: Actually, I read a time ago that Windows Longhorn (now Vista) had its codebase actually written from scratch. Bill Gates was quoted as "Wishing we'd done it sooner" I believe. Or was that article published on April 1st or something.. <_< ?

If they have really written it from scratch, well... it definately is NOT futuristic enough for that... they had a study for an OS called Singularity which maybe shows more innovation but they don't code it.
I don't think it will only be for 64bit processors, but it could be possible, then all those Intel fanboys would wonder why they can't run it with their one-year-old processors :p .

There is a WinXP 64bit out since more than half a year I believe.

I think in any case they SHOULD have done it sooner... just look at it, all big new stuff like WinFS for example won't make it into the end-2006 release... they will maybe be added sometime in 2007. Think about it.
Isn't a release cycle of 5 years somewhat slow compare to 6 months for the fast linux distros adding some functionality, usability and security everytime (or rather every day). Windows only makes high-threat security patches if M$ wants to fix them....

Longhorn was built from scratch. Then, they gave up, and just upgraded XP a lot. Yup, thats vista for you.

EDIT: Fresh install XP or vista, they do boot up in seconds, install more then 2 programs on it, and bam, 1-2 min wait time lol.

I thought it was the other way around. First they built it on XP, and it started crashing. Then, they decided to take the Linux approach and start with a solid kernel.

Actually Vista was written from scratch, but because of peoples oppinions about Vista looking so different from XP they decided to remodel the interface to retain a lot of XP's interface. So not to give windows users the shock of getting used to something totally different.

Under the hood though Vista is very different, it's a whole new breed of OS, it just looks like XP that's all.

To be honest, even if Vista was the best OS on the planet, people would still slag it off because it's a Microsoft product. It's just the way it is....

Edit: Actually in my experience, Linux always takes longer to boot up and shut down than XP. But to be fair, Linux can remain running for ever without requiring a reboot. A present windows system usually runs out of resources after about 3 weeks.

But it's SO bloatware!
