Well, after working with CloneKeen2X (version 0.2 coming soon, btw), I've decided I want to take up a homebrew game project for the GP2X. I wanted to know what people would like to see. One thing I was thinking of was a Escape Velocity-type game, the old space freelancer game (not to be confused with Terminal Velocity... that'd be an awesome game for GP2X too, but it'd also be much harder to write).

If anyone can come up with something that interests me more, I might think about switching ideas though.

Oh, and, um... bounties are always welcome of course :p

How about Super Mario War (smw.72dpiarmy.com) or Battle for Wesnoth?

Well, both of those are open-source games, and SMW is even already SDL.

I was looking for more of a project that was either a completely original idea (not likely with me, unfortunately...) or a clone of a closed-source game. I want to challenge myself a bit more here, or something to that effect anyway.

Come to think of it, a Super Smash Bros. type game would be a lot of fun to code, but I probably would have to make it "fake 3D" or just blatently 2D. Oh well, there wasn't much point to that game being 3D anyway. Heh.

I would like to see bejewed 2 on the GP2X. Bejeweled 1 was great, but 2 is more fun with the bomb gems. The zookeeper clone is ok, but I like the unlimited play mode that it doesn't seem to have. (All timed modes)

Ask the creator of smashgp32 if he will let ya port his creation. Its not bad...
or
You could make one from scratch and base it upon the smash gp32, and add other gameplay features.. Such as a story line :p

Thatd be cool ^^

how about a 'construction set' type of game. Something that saves itself as a gpe executable. (either in gp2x or PC)

something like a shooter construction set, pinball construction set, rpg construction set, wargame construction set.
these shouldn't be terrible to code and leaves the terrible burden of things like music, art, and plot to people with a ton of time on their hands, but aren't up to the task of real coding. It's the game that keeps on gaming.

The creator of SmashGP says he's getting a GP2X by the end of this month and is going to port it himself.

YES!!

Escape Velocity Nova had me addicted for months!

something similar to that would make me SUPER HAPPY!

Take it from someone who's written one -- space freelancing games are hard. I was working on one with a procedurally generated universe, economy, etc and where actual events would affect the economy and trade lanes.

I eventually gave up because the code was a mess (though I want to try it again, with a bigger emphasis on Star Control-style exploration). The screenshots are here for it.

Good luck; I recommend working out the inter-system travel as the first thing you do, rather than writing the in-system stuff and trying to hack on the inter-system later on.

Yeah, I know it's not an easy game to write. Mine wouldn't have a generated universe, probably a static one with an editor so people could make their own and stuff. I'm not quite sure how I'll handle the economy and stuff, but I figure the project will be a fun one to try out at least.

Well, if you have any questions, there's no harm in chasing up leads. Drop me a PM if you have a design or programming question and I'll see if there's anything in my files you can use.

I'd love to see a clone of Zuma (a Popcap Game, can be found on MSN Games) Now that I have ordered a cap from DaveC, this would be very enjoyable (no sore thumb) I used to play Zuma all the time. It's really addictive

<Wish Mode=Mega-OldSkool>

I'd love to see a Moon Patrol clone... Simple, elegant, and a great way to kill HOURS.
