I was thinking about getting a GP2X with some money from Christmas. I was looking around other sites and this forums and I was wondering about a few things. Is it really true that the battery life is an hour or so? Will they change this or other things in the future? Should I get it now or wait for a revision?

Basically I'm just asking if it'd be better to wait.

thanks a lot

Battery life is much better if you use the best batteries. It is about an hour with alkalines, but I've heard it is about 5 hours if you get some Ansmann 2600mAh and so on.

are any hardware 'revisions' planned/expected for anytime soon?

sorry this thread probably sounds a little noobish.

EDIT: Are Ansmann 2600mAh's really only $20? Thats sounds a little cheap compared to some other people saying they have $80 batteries etc.

I have 4 Energizer 15 min rechargables 2200MHh and they last about 4.5 hours (Of movie time, more with gaming and music). 1.3.0 comming out very soon will increase it more.

Battery life isn't that much of a problem if you get some good rechargeables. The only problem I've had with mine so far is that the joystick sucks and registers right as up sometimes. Other than that, It's amazing.

I bought 4 energizer 2500 NiMH batteries at best buy for about $14 (no charger includes, I already had one). They last about 4 hours for me, so in total I have about 8 hours to play with my gp2x without recharging anything.

About deciding whether or not to get the gp2x:
I love my gp2x, but I know that many people bought theirs expecting it to "just work" like nintendos handhelds do. This is not the case with the gp2x (or gp32 for that matter). To enjoy the gp2x you will have to get used to waiting for updates for emulators, playing half-complete emulators or games (either that or limited yourself to the few complete ones), and tinkering with things to get them to work. If you really want to get into the spirit of the gp2x you should probably try your hand at making something; if you're a programmer making a game, if you're a good artist then maybe making a skin or icons for someones emulator/game, if you're a writer you might want to try your hand at making a visual novel (although this would require at least a basic level of programming). If you can't do any of those things, well, you can either talk on the boards to people and wait for people to make things or you can go and learn how to program (or how to write or how to draw).

I love this stuff, and I love my gp2x.

I took a C++ class and didn't like it (100% because of the teacher) so i'm going to have to teach myself programming. does anyone have some good tutorials for how general programming and homebrew, emulators work?

edit: the whole reason i found out about this stuff is because i got into DC emulators / homebrew.

maybe if the board moderator lifted the search restrictions, we wouldnt have threads like this.

i was in the same boat as you, ive bitten the bullet and my 2x is due to tomorrow. Vice the commodore emulator was the deal maker for me.

If you aren't enthusiastic enough to run out and buy one, you might want to just wait (don't want any more buyer's remorse around here). I preordered mainly because I like to tinker, but I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone who seriously just wants to copy some movies and emulators over from their PC and play them forever without having to worry about hardware/software issues, because it simply isn't going to work that way.
