Gp2x Discussion On Bbc Radio 6 Music

Well, the fact that he wrote it should be enough to point out it's his oppinion.

actually, if you dont say "in my opinion" its quite rude, because it looks like you speak for everyone else in the world

edit: crap double post, sorry
Obviously it's his opinion, by virtue of the fact he said it. If you can't tell whose opinion it is, you are an idiot. Pointing out it was his own opinion would be redundant. The only time you need to point out whose opinion it is, is when it is somebody else's opinion.

Wow, a lot of people complaing about the BBC.  You should try TV here in the States, is positively sucks ass, and I doubt you'll find too many people that disagree with me.  I do get a channel that carries BBC broadcasts, and I think it is probably one of the best channels I have, along with BBC online.

in the UK, upto 30 people are put in prison each year for not paying for the BBC, many 10's of thousands are fined upto £1000 with the majority being single parent families.

so please, enough of this BBC is wonderful shite. remember, while your enjoying your BBC, uk residents are forced to fund it, no if's or but's....

http://www.tvlicensing.biz/

Yeah, I never really knew this was an issue in the UK. Amazing that people are actually jailed, quite sad really.

As far as the BBC being wonderful, I was refering to the quality and content of it when compared to the shit that is TV here in the States, in fact, we get several hundred choices of shit, but nothing all that great. This is aside from that fact that UK'ers have to fund it, but every month I pay my cable bill, and I'm sure a portion of that bill goes to the BBC from my cable provider, however small it may be. Of which I'm sure it doesn't lessen the amount UK'ers pay.

Just for an example, how much do you have to pay per year for the BBC, and is this price based on household income or anything? Just curious.

Nice radio talk :p I'm not very happy that he says it's like a pre-production one or whateevr but still.

As for the BBC I don't pay for it (Too Young ... No illiegal doings here). But I think it's a bit unfair that people have to pay when they might not even use it. Like someone who just likes to play PS2 or something. I've heard it's quite expensive but I don't know. I do like the BBC though. No adverts (Obviously) and a some gem shows.

So your happy to force fund the BBC or face prison, while any other country on the planet can access the BBC for free (net) or for that matter across europe (sat and net).

v strange.
I don't like being forced to do anything, but until the country go's fully digital there's no way to get out of payin it.
No court in the u.k will take up a case against the BBC while they're still broadcasting the old fashioned way.
Apparently the BBC changed their defence for the courts by saying that u.k residents were getting charged for recieving the tv (& radio) signals & not for actualy watching/listening to the programs.
It's kinda on the same lines as having to pay for a BT phone line as well as some broadband internet packages.. even if u don't ever use the phone.
I'm surprised that after all these years, no one made a set top box to block out the BBC channels though!
We just have to face up to it when living in the u.k.. we get screwed

You brits can be happy. In Germany, we have to pay GEZ. It probably is the same, but at least you get some funny/original programs (comedy shows etc.), whereas the german equivalents to BBC show just crap.

Even 6 months ago you couldn't have dreamed about this sort of coverage, can't wait to give it a listen! :)

As for the BBC, I do agree with snaff but it has to be remembered that the BBC is very broadbased (to use a horrible Blairism). The politics and control is over WHEN stuff goes out more than what, and I'd meet Taras halfway and say that sometimes the writing is exactly as he describes.
I've seen BBC News documentaries on rarely talked about issues. You could watch CNN for 100 years and not see things about the Zapatista movement or about an American President stealing an election but I've seen both on the BBC.

I agree with you Poobik! the BBC's forced licensing has driven me nuts for years, it makes no sense at all if you dont watch them. I wanted to sign the petition on the site you linked to (thanks by the way) but it doesnt seem to be functional.

I'm surprised that after all these years, no one made a set top box to block out the BBC channels though!

On the site that Poobik links to http://www.bbcresistance.com theres a talk radio show recording which talks about it, and it mentions that there was a tv developed that doesnt receive bbc signals, but apparently this doesnt matter.

If you live in the UK and you have a television capable of recieving broadcasts from *anyone* you must pay money to the bbc. Its daylight robbery.

As a non UK person, I watch BBC World News.

The alternative is Fox News or CNN world news for getting world news, so its good to have something of quality. But I'm sure I'm paying something indirectly, because more then 50% of the transmission is adverts.

So be proud that you're paying for the BBC to grow and by doing so, saving the world from American news/propaganda.

About the BBC delima. If BBC is owned by the government, why does it not simply fund it by tax, and increase tax to cover it?

That would mean everyone, including those without TVs or those with TVs but without an aerial, would have to pay for the BBC.

Just the price of ad-free TV, I guess.

Surely that's your opinion, though. And because you haven't stated that it's your opinion, by your own rules you're being quite rude...

Anyway. Nobody is forced to pay a TV licence - just don't own a TV (like me). You still get access to all the BBC radio stations, and all the online content - which is still more than people outside the UK get for free.

The BBC's remit is to give equal credence to both sides of every story -- which is ridiculous, from a journalist's point of view, as there is usually one side of a story that is right, and one that is wrong. But don't kid yourselves, the BBC does have its own propaganda going on. Ever notice its pro-Palestine bias? No? Well, look out for it next time a reporter moans about the evil Israelis and the destruction they have dealt the wonderful, peace-loving Palestinians. (No, I don't support Israel on this matter, but sometimes the BBC goes too far).

A smaller point - do you remember when the Tories were in power, the BBC's official colours were shades of blue? Notice how, when Labour came in, they changed to red? Weird, eh?

The only good things on BBC are Doctor Who, Nick Robinson and University Challenge. Everything else can get stuffed.

That's only my opinion, of course!

it is rude, wether or not people find it offensive is up to the individual, but theres a thing called manners, dont know if you've heard of it..

If American TV is one of our largest "cultural" exports, it is no wonder that the rest of the world has such a low opinion of us. Well, that and everything else I suppose...

um.. well surely the US's biggest cultural export is genocide?

ahem. I'm going to hide now, as the flames descent. teehee :p
(well, stuff it, we were off-topic already!)

Taras: heh, but that's just opinion too ;)
I think there is a pro-Isreali bias if anything, your experiences with the BBC on this issue are clearly the exact opposite of mine.

I agree though, it is best not to watch TV at all.
Sorry to keep this off topic but it seems to be going that way.

Nice one Craig, sorry this went so off-topic!

Bloody right Sky TV is theft, £35 a month for repeats of The Bill and Family Fortunes...

Dished out by the BBC, at least with Sky you can choose whether you want to pay for it or not if you think its crap. An yeah sorry for going off topic :)

for the love of god. people without TVs? are you serious. That's like saying people without tooth brushes should be able to claim dental care.

If it was a tax, you could always set up exemption for hippies who choose not to own a TV just to keep people from protesting, but really. the BBC is a national icon, just like SBS and ABC is for Australia. The only difference is that BBC has a much higher budget then those two combined which is the decision of the government. Next you'll be saying that people should be exempt from paying tax for roads, parks and esential services just because you choose not to use them.

I'm sure some students dont have a TV either, but I doubt they pay tax.

It's not. It's empircally observed.

For the record, I think the BBC is fairly equal, but if anything I would say that the bias is in favour of Palestine (or at least the anti-israel movement).

I'm sure some students dont have a TV either, but I doubt they pay tax.
Yes we do. Everybody pays tax.

The problem is most of us have access to a TV, but many don't want it for watching TV. Some of us just want to waste hours playing Pro Evo until 6AM or whatever. Why should we pay for the BBC when we don't watch it?

No it isn't. It's like people who choose not to care for their teeth being forced to pay for other people's dental care.

Well i think it's just that icurafu doesnt understand the tv licensing fees.

Funding the bbc isnt tax per se but its a license that everyone who owns a tv has to pay for. If you don't own a tv then you don't have to pay and if you only own a black and white tv then you don't have to pay as much.

Actually I prefer paying the licensing fees so that I dont have to see any adverts on bbc. Which means I can actually get a full hour out of an hour long program instead of about 40 minutes.
The way I figure it is that if we werent funding the bbc they would be taxing us on the tv anyway but at least this way we dont have to see adverts.

And I really liked that feature, thought it was funny, but I didn't like the mention of the battery life. Seems to be the main problem that people pick up on when reviewing it because of those cheap batteries included. I think craig should take those batteries out of the box and replace them with some decent batteries on all the review units.

The BBC would never call Israel evil, therefore that information has not been empirically observed. The data from the TV may be recieved through the senses but what we feel it means comes from us.
