The Imitation Of The Gp2x Is Wandering About

Can't rearly see a bad side to this machine coming out..
2 machines = More stuff ported.
It just goes to show that the GP2X has a hell of a lot of potential if it's starting to get copied. This WILL make people stand up & take notice more of the GP2X & the GP2X will always be viewed as the original :D.
Leave all the expensive advertising to them. People will see that machine & then look about for cheaper & better alternatives.
Let the magizines rave on about a war between the 2 consoles. The best type of advertising u can get ;).

U never know.. some of the fixes that they make to their version of the operating system could bring the much needed stability to the GP2X a lot quicker than expected.

Yeah, I think the main issue is, will it hurt GPH? You;ve got a smal intelligent company that creates a great device then someone comes along an builds a better one for twice the price. Will people pay more for the more advanced version or will they settle for the original for a lower price?

One thing os for sure it means GPH will have to step up and try to address the problems that the GP2X sufferes from much quicker in order to make the choice harder for consumers because of the joystick is better and the video player has better support it could cause people to think twice about buying the cheaper one.

Also when HH comes out, only the original ports can be used on the odd-i (Really STUPID name, but oh well, I'm not buying one))

So I think many of the Odd-I buyers... (Whatever many there are) would likely look to the korean GP2X site for programs/utilities, but if they wanted to play ALL the games without glitches, they would need an actual GP2X. As stated, HH will be specific to the 2X hardware, so to port those, they would need what, a 2X HH interpreter for the Odd-I? That'll slow those titles down.

It bothers me a bit that they got where they are on the shoulders of others, but since it's not 100% compatible, I guess it's alright.

this all hinges on whether HH ever becomes the saving grace it appears to be. If it's another one of those "great potential but only on paper" type of things it might not be as helpful.

Plus we still have to wait for it to actually come out.

Just noticing this in the pics of the P10; man that thing is a porker! people thought the 2X was going to be bulky when it came out but this thing really IS!

Korean programmers are porting Gp2x apps/emus with open source code to Odd-i. MAME for Odd-i was a direct port from Gp2x version, I heard. It uses the same Magic Eye MMSP2 chipset and 64mb RAM. However, it's got 20/30GB harddrive and 2500mah rechargeable battery (3 hours 30 minutes movie playback time :) ). It's got radio and 2M camera functionality. TV-Out is supported, so it's a cousin to GP2x in many ways. One nice thing, I thought, is that it's got TV-in function so that you can record movies/TV programs. Also, with USB2.0, people connect PC joypad to it to play games. It's more than twice more expensive then GP2x, so it's not in the same market.
That sounds soooo nice. Does it run at the same speed the gp2x version? If it does, then this thing could practically piggy back off the scene. Lots of programs are opensource espcially emulators.

If a clone that has more features and 'extras' than a GP2X for LESS then $179 US dollars, THEN GPH should feel threatened.

That Odd-i will cost what at least $400? (no idea what the price actually is, but its got to be in that range)

these things are not anywhere near in the same range/category.

I suspect we will eventually see more clones or compatible systems based on MMSP2 chips. This could be a good thing.

The more apps that are made for MMSP2 chips the better. If they have something like SNES we could port that to GP2X. Those recessed buttons look bad for games.

Actually, its much-better LCD is really attractive :) (yes, really the best, I believe)
But if you want handheld gaming/multi-media device, GP2X still rocks.

I agree more MMSP2 or open source machines will help the scene alot but unfortunately, odd-i is only a PMP, heavily focused on Media playing. :(

Even though it's MMSP2 and linux kernel let you use codes for GP2x with less efforts, you will only have 20MB memory (which is worse than GP2x) and awful joystick.

Anyway, I hope franxis can get some credits from odd-i community too :)

Way cool, on PMPmaniac.net , I also found informations about a korean handheld called iStation v43.

They say, there's a big scene in Korea already and they port emulators to it. It's linux based too!

For the most part a lot of them were only intended to be PMPs which frankly just need a big screen and storage so estetically ,as game systems, it probably wasnt even concidered that they look ugly since with PMPs your focus is on the screen so no one would care if they arnt awesome looking.

This one is friggin awesome too, I hope it gets emulators........

Are there any *buttons* on that one? o_O

Maybe our scene can get along with the other scenes, and vice versa. That would be a good thing, wouldn't it?

How would you play them without buttons? Psychokinesis?

Plus game emulators would either be the size of a postage stamp because of the resolution, or be all stretched and scaled, meh.
