Yay, I have a GP2x and it is AMAZING.

-It has an excellent design

-the screen is great (dont forget to peel off the second protective film)

-The buttons are great

-DRMD is almost perfect

-it is the perfect size and the battery bulge at the back is actually great for placing your middle fingers on to support th device when it is played

Problems

- The colour sometimes seems strange, lik vertical lines appearing on the start up screen. But it should be updated on the first official firmware released in Jan.

- The joystick is a little tough to control. However the thumb control bit can be removed easy and should make way for a concaved design that your thumb fits into rather that the convex, rounded design that your thumb can slide off of sometimes. I am wondering whether the firmware can improve on the joystick.

Conclusion: Superb. from what I can tell, this is gonna be the only homebrew device wirth getting in the future and will play nearly all old games platforms to near perfection: ZX, Atari, NES, SNES, MS, Genesis.

Order one now if you havent done so allready.

Nice summary, thanks.

I'll be grabbing one as soon as my current contract finishes (no time to play it until then!). Can't wait. I'm ordering a 1gb SD card today to be ready for it...

I got mine today :) and i have to agree with everything you say but...

...the joystick.

I have just completed sonic 1 through DRMD and have had no problems with it  (mabye i have a weird thumb)

I urge everyone who has not yet ordered or bought one to do so now!!!

i second that!

got mine tuesday and it's awesome :)

also worth noting it comes with firmware 1.01 pre-installed - so no bricking worries for now!!

i am looking for another joystick head though

if you ain't got it, get it

I got mine this morning, but i cant use it till christmas, i had a little fiddle with it though.

got the screen protector on absolutly fine with no visible dust, it was pretty easy actually, i dunno what all the fuss is about with that.

the joystick is perfect, it wasnt too stiff, moved around easily and felt fine on my thumb, im guessing they modified it at GBAX before shipping ?

firmware i noticed on boot was 1.0.1, thats updated right?

it took no more than 10 seconds to boot, seriously, whats all this about 30 seconds? i barely had time to read the text on the boot screen and the menu with all the icons was up!

got 1GB card and usb reader fine, also usb cable, a CD, instruction manual and a christmas card from gp2x.co.uk :)

when i unpacked the box and seen the gp2x box, i was shocked how small it is, the pictures really dont give you a clue, i expected it to be at least 3x as bigger

the unit itself is awesome, its a work of art, felt nice in my handetc, and also emphasis on the joystick, the joystick was nice.

i went into the memory area and couldnt figure out how to go back to the main menu until i had to put it away, but i cant wait to get it on christmas morning smile.gif

this will be the first christmas in about 6 years since ive looked forward to something :)

thanks gbax!
oh yeah, also i noticed no scanlines or anything wrong with the screen, no flickering at all or any of that.

I oreder mine from GP32Z.com on November 22nd, shipped on the 28th, and was here by December 6th.

To bad i cant use it until xmass. I haven't been able to see the box its in. My mom grabbed it as soon as the mail man handed it to me. She always tries to keep the xmass gifts hidden so I get suprised when we see them. I agree with her, but when Im the one who actually ordered it off the net, she doesn't need to try to hide it from me :p.

my parents were the same way when I was younger. This year I had to help my mom get my little brother an ipod video for christmas! My twin brother and I had to get a PS2 (at $200 then) as a JOINT present and he's getting a $300 ipod  My parents have gotten a lot looser and he benefits from it.... that and my dad has gotten a couple raises. All i asked for this christmas were a couple NDS games, a season of Stargate SG-1, and a couple other small things.

Anyways, back on topic:
Glad you like your gp2x! it's nice to know that not all of the newcomers have negative attitudes. Personally I like the gp2x MUCH better than my gp32, but that's probably because I have a non-lit gp32.....

I also got mine today, but as its a christmas present im unable to open it :( anlthough the Royal Mail Next Delivery bag is very fetching :)

I got mine from gbax today paid for out of my hard earned cash so no waiting till xmas :p
I really can't believe its so good no need to upgrade firmware infact no probs at all.
Got drmdx running on sonic straight off and nks snes running mario all-stars got sound on that and really didn't expect that, i'm sure i read that wasn't going on but not complaining.
Great system gonna try day of the tentacle next.
This really is a sweet sweet machine.
Dr DivX encodes perfectly and reasonably quickly.

can we get some pics...please

i(and probably others)want to see a hand to gp2x ratio

Minivan.com has a hand-to-GP2X ratio image in its review article. You can see the image in Lik-Sang's translation of the article here: http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3708

The SNES emu has two cores, you probably pressed the button that loaded the game into the old core, which has sound and can be very slow in some games, whereas the core with no sound runs much faster with all games.
