I modded mine too. I took the standard cap and concaved it. It fits my thumb much better now without slipping off. It is also not quite as high making the dead zone problem slightly less. The kind of rough looking rim is just part of the original pebbly finish that was there. I would recommend this for those with the toolz. I think GPH should make them similar to this, it seems to work well.

While I was at it I put in a glass screen too :)

How did you concave it? It looks rockin'.

I used a drill press with an x-y mill table. I clamped a lathe cutting tool (square bar stock with a rounded cutting tip ground in it) into a vise then cut it out. I would lower the drill chuck with the joystick cap in the chuck into the lathe tool then cranked the x axis of the table to widen the cut area. Kind of like a make shift lathe.

YESSS!!!!

DaveC rocks my world!!

(technologically, hardware mod speaking)

I thought I could take some off, but I never thought that much would come off!!

1) Does this make the stick seem like it has a smaller dead zone?

2) I notice the edge is still there, are you planning on rounding off the sharp edge?

Or does it even matter anymore?

3) Which helps more, the reduced height, or the increased grip?

I wish I could try it, but I might need to send it back, it is a brick at the moment.

I just love hardware mods :D , But I wonder why GPH didn't just cast them in this shape to begin with?

Looks great DaveC. Wish I had the tools to do that. So far I tried the joystick from the Dreamcast controller. Almost worked except I needed more thickness to make it stay in place. The bumps on the top gave alot of grip. Right now I'm trying to find my broken NGPC and see if I can mod that joystick on. Don't know where it is at the moment.

Maybe a trip to the hardware store might give me some more ideas.

I dont understand why it wasnt concave to start with. Did no one there actually pick one up and try and use it? Obviously not I guess judging by the firmware issues heh

note to gp2x distributors
i'm waiting for the official launch date to purchase and would not mind paying a little extra for this mod (hint, hint)

It improves the dead zone slightly. It is still too big for my liking but anything better is a plus.

Since the pad of your thumb fits in the concave the sharp edge doesn't matter anymore.

Both things help but the increased grip is the biggest advantage.

I wanted to get the actual joystick part and see if there is a way to mod the switches to fix the dead zone. The only ones that have it that I know of RS components want to charge me 25 GBP just for shipping though, what a fucking ripoff  I would like to tell them to piss off but I can't find anyplace else that has that part :( So I will wait and see if anything else comes up.

Bummer, I have also been looking, any word yet from the guy who said he was buying a couple?

Have you seen the product pdf on the joystick?

It says 24 degrees between full up and full down, not a lot, but obviously just a little too much for us :(

I may be that guy that said he was buying a couple. But with that shipping charge they can bite me.

I haven't seen the PDF, I didn't know there was one.

"file has expired" :(

Whoops, I think the servers are down, I put it up on my page, here you go.

Edit: (naw)mcx and Talyz If you take a machining course you will know what he has done, he explained it clearly (well . . . sort of, I doubt he is an English major :) )

He put the stick in a drill-press-like machine called a "mill", this is different because it has a table that moves left or right (X axis) or front to back(Y axis)

The table has fixtures, but mostly a vise-like one is used.

Dave put a sharp metal tool in the "vise",

Then he was able to move the stick down in the "drill" press,

and by moving the table, he cut into the spinning stick, if you look at the picture you will see the lines it left, kind of like a record's grooves.

I just thought of something, if you could cut down the underside a little, then you might be able to shorten the shaft, might gain an extra couple mm that way.

I notice mine has at least a mm clearance around the bottom of the stick to the faceplate.

I guess it doesn't matter all that much, but every little bit helps.

Hello, i have a GP2x, and I maked sticks :D, i never think broke the original stick, and i maked sticks of 0.
Custom sticks in this web, have all my customs sticks (Dave thanks for the inspiration for my last stick)
