Impressive Review Units

I really would avoid distributing any ROMS... though Retro gaming mag (if it's the same one I know) probably won't mind if they're images from older systems, since they get away with selling mags with cover-discs chocka with hundreds of old games, and the emus. Distributing emus themselves though is safe (unless the emus license forbids it) and I'm sure that none will be able to NOT play some emulated games ;)

Of course, the ports of quake and so forth are a definite must...

wait a moment... PULSTAR WORKS NOW?! OMG... MY SD card is on the way, please GP2x you have to hold on!

oh on topic:

for SNES: be sure to include Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Seiken Denetsu III, Tales of Phantasia(perhaps the english translated version :)), Megaman X1(or x3 however I guess it's not working yet), Stunt Race FX(if it's working it's a blast), Super Mario Kart and Super Mario Allstars, the rom incl. Mario World too :D

That looks very tidy indeed.

All I can reccommend is making sure you give them a PSU that works well, or at least a few sets of Ansmann batterys...

the last thing we want is them going "well we had lots of interesting things to test, but one major flaw was we could only play for 30mins at a time!"

I'm going to test a load of PSX games soon, so I'll see what I can get running nicely there, would be nice to include Crash Bandicoot or something thats nice and playable on it :D

Maybe someone with the know how could do a quick port of an easy to emulate machine like the gb or something just so the gp2x has more to play when theyre reviewing it. Simple older console should be easier to get up to playable speed.

good idea, this would mean that I do not have to switch to my gp32 all the time for playing gameboy games such as tennis or race drivin'. Unfortunately I am just a stupid user and no dev.

Narcissu - A great visual novel that can be run on the gp2x using onscripter. A free english version is available online and there is a patch on these boards that makes the text bigger so that you can read it on the gp2x.

M.U.L.E. - A great c64 game, run it with frodo. I just discovered this game, and i can't stop playing it!

<snip>

Aww man, I was doing ok waiting for my gp2x but reading stuff like is gonna drive me crazy. :)

M.U.L.E. is one of my favorite games ever. Single player is fun, but the *real* fun happens when you have 4 people playing (only on the atari 800).

I highly suggest against including commerical roms. It's legally a grey area as stated before.

However, that said, nothing against including Public Domain roms, like those available here : http://pdroms.de/index.php

Yeah, for legal reasons I recommend you supply only the emulators. If they are into the emulation scene, they will probably supply their own roms.

In the mean time, Quake 1 and Heretic with demo files are the most impressive.

If they are not into games, then they will probably focus on it as a PMP. So download all the latest high quality trailers and convert them to QVGA DivX 4. Try and find some 4:3 trailers.

Cartoons come up clear on a small screen, so maybe some anime trailers as well.

You could also include a tonne of screenshots from emulators to encourage them to grab some.

If you have time to show of the PSX, then there used to be demo CDs for games. I threw out about a thousand of them a year back.

You could find some cute 2D ones that worked well.

Not very constructive comments, I know, just letting you know of my opinion.
Send one to Retro Gamer if they're still going, haven't seen it in the shops for a while, but then perhaps I'm just not looking hard enough...

Oh, and there's also GamesTM, they have 30-odd pages of retro stuff each month, and although they SAY that emulation is wrong, you know they won't be able to resist this... ;)

Live Publishing (that used to put out Retro Gamer) went bust just before issue 19 was to come out. Which is why you haven't seen it for a while. Unfortunately the took everyones money with them, as the ship sank.

Imagine Publishing has bought it out now, and have just (today, 08/12/05) put out issue 19. I believe one of (if not the) head honcho of the Retro secion of GamesTm is heading up the new Retro Gamer.

More details of the mag at www.retrogamer.net

Cheers

Craig, I don't know if you're still following this thread, but someone at Ars Technica very much wants to review the GP2X.

I told him to get in touch with you (hope I didn't foul up). Just so you know.
