Can anyone offer/lend me one? Or does anyone know where I can get a connector? Pref from UK.

Broke my 2 day old GP2X and want to try and fix it!

Thanks,

Mark

What did you do?!
I was doing a quick hacky report of my GP32 port of atari800. Yeah I know there is already an SDL one but it won't work with GPX2 inputs etc. Anyway I copied over libc.so.6 to /lib (which didn't already exist, I didn't overwrite anything) and now it won't boot.

Why didn't I just set LD_LIBRARY_PATH?!

Mark

edit: Actaully libc.so.6 was there. So I'm not surprised its died. I just thought it wasn't, wouldn't have been so stupid as to knowingly copy over it. Had an incomplete backup of everything which didn't have it.

Welcome to my advert for static linking ;).

Foft, I may be able to help but flashing the whole OS like that is not a nice job and I think you are the 1st to brick a retail unit. I bricked a few dev kits :D. I don't think we have a full ROOTFS for the retail image yet. I am however NOT going to let me serial kit out of my hands :). BTW, it takes about 4hr's to fix, if not 4hr's * 5-6 to work out why it did not work ;).

I'm sure I'd have managed to brick a dev kit if I'd had one:)

I thought so. Had to ask though, just on the offchance! People keep saything they will soon be available, so hopefully...

Can I read the whole NAND image over serial from a working unit (a friend has one) and then simple write it onto mine via serial. That will take about 3 hours each way I guess. Or is it more complex?

Thanks,

Mark

I guess the other option is to buy another GP2X for now. Does anyone know who has some still available that I can get in the next week or two?

Thanks,

Mark

God I hope GPH release software that repairs bad flashes...

With the unreliable SD access it's all too easy to see the unit getting bricked

Considering that uboot doesn't have any sd capabilities, you can read the nand, but your talking a custom program, and another 4 hours to dump it down the serial port to your pc.

If you have a working unit, much easier to boot into linux, and "dd" the nand to an sd card, if the sd driver lasts long enough. Normally needs a few attempts to work.

I have a friend at work who has one so I'll get him to copy(dd) the image for me. Although DjWillis said dd didn't work properly any more or something. I presume I can write back an image with uboot without too much hassle (just time)?

So I just need a serial... I've asked GPH and GBAX nicely. Fingers crossed one of them will lend or sell me one. None of the devkit owners are keen on lending me one:-(

If only it booted off SD. I think that is a must have for replacement firmwares. The kernel has SD drivers so it should just be a case of optionally passing it root=/dev/sd or whatever...

Thanks,

Mark

foft (mark) would you consider selling the GP2X for a resnoble price if unable to fix. gp32_console

The vultures can stop hovering. This unit is 100% fixable, it is just a time consuming process. I have made an offer to help Mark fix it but I won’t loan out my serial board for now as I need it to much.

If he can get a good DD rip of the retail ROOTFS then you have all the parts needed to unbrick units with damaged Linux installs as it is what I have done several times with dev-kits. My concern is that DD may not behave in the same way on the final units but the only way to find out is to try ;).

If this works out and fixes foft's unit, can you do a write-up of the process? (back up and restore) From both of your experiences, it looks like it's very easy to accidentally brick the unit if you do any "power user" stuff with it, and I'd like to back mine up before I start coding for it.

As soon as the repair is done with a retail unit I will do an 'unbricking' guide for sure ;).

I'll write the 'bricking' guide then ;). Got two lovely korean bricks now, one unrepairable even with a serial lead, and the other bricked because of the serial adapter falling to pieces and as it's a dev board it's useless without being able to log in. Good old GPH - they make great consoles, but they're fucking useless with a soldering iron
