My Linksys router is an embedded Linux device - it boots in about 2 seconds. In that time it has to start at the very least web server and a dhcp server and I’m sure quite a few other things. I also have a Linksys Network Attached Storage Device that’s also running embedded Linux. That one takes a full 4 seconds to start, but I’m pretty 2 of those seconds is the time it takes the hard disk to turn on. A well implemented embedded Linux system is not slow to boot.

Er... does your router need to initialize sound and video?

4. red LED is always on. it's firmware bug. will be fixed very quickly

I can't believe no-one else noticed this. Let me spell it out:

The red LED is controlled by software!

This means that you can have a status indicator light for debugging, drive light emulation for Frodo and UAE, etc etc etc.

Probably not, but LinuxBIOS has achieved some incredibly impressive boot times on various hardware types. InitNG has also made progress in getting Linux to boot faster. This is all on full-on desktop or server hardware, not an embedded system which would likely see more improvement. If the GP2X is slow to boot, it's due to the implementation, not the OS.

Eh, I'll be watching video till games/emus come out. My SD card is 150x, the fastest speed for SD cards right now, or I think anyway, so the movie-freeze bug won't affect me. I think by the time a good emu or game comes out GPH will have everything fixed, or if they release the source the community will fix it. I can't believe it's this close, it seems it was such a long wait, can't wait to open the box, mmm, new gadget smell.

What I meant it is Unoptimized (for the GP2X).
Linux is not new. (well to the GP2X it is...youknowhatImean).

Indeed as this is a solid state device, boot times should be less than 5 seconds.

Comparitively speaking the GP2X does not have much to initialize.

I'm wondering what the hold up is? 20 seconds is alot for a little game system. a PDA might get away with that buy the GP2X should do better.
 
The issues on GP2X are because Gamepark Holdings are very bad about Linux programming, very newbies and it seems not asking for help/contracting to experienced Linux programmers.

Nope. all issues are because original mmsp2 linux was SUCK.
it was mainly developed for winCE.
GPH did all their effort ;)

Does the GP2X need to initialize a firewall, webserver, universal plug & play, wireless hardware, ethernet hardware and a handful of other crap that actual handles the task of routing? Embed Linux boots fast. There are two possible reasons for the GP2X slow boot. (1)- It's starting thing it doesn't actually need (2)- The front-end program takes the vast majority of the boot time.

I think one of the stengths that the GP2X is going to have, unless GPH make a mess of things. Is upgrading to new goodness, all the time. I think the constant stream of homebrew firmware is going to get out of control, and its going to be good. Fixes and extention all around, I expect my Linux OS to be compressed onto the 64MB with no space :p

Anyone want to lay odds who gets hardware cursor working on the menu first :)

There was a firmware where you could use a pointer for the GP32. Was quite nice to control.
 
Not sure on this, but it sounds like linux is using an initrd boot. Initializing a ramdisk is like booting twice in succesion, not to mention wasteful of ram.

Even windows sucked hardcore when It first came out, (took what 6 years before a half decent one appeared).

It doesn't suck hardcare? :lol:
