After reading through the pages on the forum I'm beginning the think we should start a list of what is possible on the GP2x.... I know I have missed some systems (and sorry to the various fanboys) but its getting late. Please add to this and lets see what is POSSIBLE.

Latest updated listed. 14/09/05

* 3DO (No)
* Amiga OCS (95% Possible)
* Amiga AGA (No)
* Amiga CD32 (No)
* Amstrad CPC 464 (100%)
* Atari 2600 (100%)
* Atari 5200 (100%)
* Atari 7800 (100%)
* Atari 800 (???)
* Atari Jaguar (no)
* Atari Lynx (100%)
* Atari ST (100%)
* BBC Micro (100%)

* GCE Vectrex (100%)
* MAME (100%) for older games only
* Mattel Intellivision (75%) controller issues. needed keypad.
* MSX (100%)
* Neo Geo (maybe) speed issues. would be possible but without ASM and extensive 2nd core use would be very slow with no sound.

* Nintendo DS (never)
* Nintendo 64 (never)
* Nokia N-Gage (Possible to a degree)

* Sega 32X (never)
* Sega CD (Possible) Reesy thinks so.
* Sega Master System (100%)
* Snes (100%) A lot of debate on this one. But I’m convinced.

after reading the topic title, i just thought, you are user number 100, who starts exactly this same thread again. you win the price!

what's the meaning of this post?
if you say something like "gamegear 100% possible"? if nobody writes/ports a gg emu, i don't care how much percent it will be possible.
or does it mean you're a coder and this is your "to do" list?

I think, from the knowledge of what we know about the hardware, what consoles *could* be emulated, an to what degree, if someone were to code an emu from scratch/port one.

I have doubts about NDS... :)

updated list:

* 3DO (No)
* Amiga OCS (95% Possible)
* Amiga AGA (No)
* Amiga CD32 (unlikely)
* Amstrad CPC 464 (100%)
* Atari 2600 (100%)

* Sega Master System (100%)
* Snes (75%) probably would have to omit transparencies to get at a good speed.
* TurboGrafx-16 (100%)
* WonderSwan / Color (100%)
* ZX Spectrum (100%)

I understood, that the GBA has similar, if not the same CPU as the one in GP32, which on the otherhand is similar to GP2X's CPU's. And the unfinished GPAdvance used this to, not emulate, but to run the GBA code straight on the CPU... If someone can complete the idea... (sourcecode?)

How about some sort of x86-machine?

And how powerfull is N-Gage? I seem to recall there being a rather nice version of the original Tomb Raider on it, which would require fair amount of oomph...

I'm sure he'd hope to get one eventually.

Anyway I mostly agree with Dave's list except for NeoGeo and SNES

Neogeo I think would depends much on the game as they run a wide gambit of complexity You certainly wouldnt expect Fatal Fury to demand the same level of power as Mark of the Wolves. So maybe there's a cut off where it starts getting less playable just like MAME.

SNES on the GP32 is already at the stage where you have to dunp transparancy for speed. I can play Front Mission just fine I just cant see what my units range is. The extra power in the 2X could make atleast this problem go away.

Atari 800, don't forget the Atari 800!!

*turns head* what was that, did someone say GBA, SNES, NES, Genisis and MAME? *runs in that direction*

ah yeah, i really hope to finish front mission on the gp2x! hope the transparency issue will be solved in the future.
and about the gba similar arm cpu thing, it sounds a lot better to approach it that way than to port vba!

i disagree totally with davec's 'no' for sega cd. Reesy also thinks it should be possible, also CD32 should be a no if amiga 1200 (aga) is a no as they are essentially the same system.

Im trying to keep an open mind with this...

Imagine if you will someone saying that SNES at around 70% playability would be availbale on the GP32 when it launched...I think most people would have dimissed it out of hand back then.

I am hopefull that Gamepark Holdings would only release something if it was a significant step forward. The hardware specs are just that but most people seem convinced the range of games will be the same.

It is a well known fact that this console is designed for emulators, if the GPX2 cannot run any emu's that it's older brother can't why bother?

I'm convinced there are a couple of suprises in store, 100% SNES and a decent / playable Amiga and DOS emu set...

/prays ;)

The Sega CD has two 68000s plus some DSPs etc. Too much for the GP2X.

The genesis is just such a mess, well okay the system itself is fine but when you plop a Sega CD on it it just doubles or triples the complexity, then add a 32X and it'd be digital mud pie.

Now if someone could figure out a way to streamline the mass of technology to something simpler that could read the same information that would be nice, like if sega had decided from the begining that the CD and genesis could be one and the same, but I have to figure if the games were designed to work in the midst of all that gunk that it'd probably require Stephen Hawking level intellegence to create a piece of code that code read one of those games smoothly.

.... actually notw that I think about it, I wonder was the mini Sega CD/genesis as complex inside as the "Voltron-like" set up of the original? Differnt chips? maybe a more efficient interior design? I dunno just dreaming off the top of my head.

yeah, that portable mega cd unit, right? probably had all the same components, but in a more compact package.

Actually, if you're referring to that Frodo c64 emulator as 100%, that's not really accurate.

As far as I know it only does line based emulation, which is far from 100% but does allow the emulator to run faster. To get 100% emulation you need to properly emulate the VIC which involves catering for all the little tricks it's capable of, such as you see in demos etc and also some games which won't work at all unless you do this.

The PSP actually has the VICE emulator ported just recently, no sound and a bit of overkill because it's not really suited to handhelds.

I'd love to see someone port the CCS64 emulator to the GP2X, it's an efficient 100% emulator that could quite possibly run fine on the new machine. Altho come to think of it I'm not sure if it's actually open source.

So possibly VICE would be the best bet, altho it would probably have to be cut down a bit to make sense on the gp2x.

Now it's just a matter whether there's any commie zealots out there willing to take it on, I don't have the coding know how for that (I can make c64 demos tho! hehe).

Cheers,

Damian

p.s. not that I'm complaining, when my gp32 and chatboard arrives I'll quite happily play the games that do work on the emulator ;)

CCS64 is definately the best c64 emulator out there but unfortunately it's shareware. I know that someone else than the orginal author made a port for unix and linux though.. Apparently the user interface is GNU GPL but the source code for the emu itself is not available. Maybe the linux version can be ported somehow?

Ah, that's a shame, CCS64 would probably be the best suited to porting to handhelds as it seems to be the fastest. I actually prefer VICE for cross-developing, but that's more from habit than anything really.

The linux version you linked to looks quite old, CCS64 has seen a bit of improvement over the years since then. I wonder how they managed to port it at all? I haven't seen those linux libraries on the ccs64 site. editL Ah, actually just noticed that there is CCS64 linux v1 on the ccs64 site, linux development of it seems to be dead tho.

BTW, nice mockup c64 gp2x skin in your sig there! Very cool B)

Edit: Just checked the Frodo page. The author is currently working on V5 that moves to event based emulation like VICE/CCS64 instead of line based, and it's coded with SDL! Ok, that has to be good news! :)
