After about one year and six months the handheld which received so many good reviews has ironically been discontinued. Go to:
www.tapwave.com to read their horrible news or visit the section Zodiac there to see more about the beauty of this great console .

What effect will this actually have?

I don't really know about the Zodiac scene, but from what I picked up, all Tapwave seemed to do was get in the way.

If this actually signals the death of a scene, obviously that's a shame.

It's something for DaveC to celebrate at least.

I suppose it stops people replacing their battery, unless there's another way of doing it?

If not, all Zodiac's will be made bricks in the future.

Don't they have to sign software too?

as in, if the company stops signing then there can't be anything new.

Was cracked long ago, so not really.

Too bad about Zodiac. Never really wanted one, but it was still kind of cool.

Why?

Why? The signing was cracked LONG ago, there was just no need to release cracked programs as Tapwave signed everything anyway.

Yup, signing was cracked ages ago, but never released to the public - only to a few specific developers, as it was not needed with tapwave signing everything pretty much overnight, or in less than an hour at times.

There's also a replacement SDK in the works, so you don't even need to use the Tapwave functions that require signing at all :)

Can't say I didn't see it comming because I did. They pushed for mainstream acceptance with an excessive price tag in a market that didn't want them. But I'm sure with the cracked signing their Homebrew scene will see lots of growth even if their userbase is trapped.

As for replacement batteries maybe the remaining stock sitting in CompUSA will drop ridiculously low and people can buy a couple to last them a few years. :D

Ah but they're Li-ion batteries, so if you bought a replacement Zodiac now, by the time you came to use it (as the batteries had died in the first), the batteries would have died in the second, as Li-ion batteries degrade from the moment they are manufactured. The only hope is that some suitable replacement can be found, which I believe will happen.

I understood they degrade from the moment they are first charged?

They do but even worse is the fact that Li-ion batteries actually deteriorate faster with no charge in them. They like to be stored with a charge, but also discharge quite fast in a PDA. So you are kind of FORCED into wearing them out and to keep them charged. So yeah Bingo is right by the time you got to the replacement they would be dead too.
