I testeted SF2 Turbo on drmd, 166mhz was 19-25 fps

Just tried SF2 Turbo

166mhz with frameskip 0 and sound rate 16500 it was 47-48fps
220mhz with frameskip 0 and sound rate 22050 it was 60fps

Not much need for anymore than 220mhz it seems

Still cool though, Isn`t it. :D

EDIT: Currently playing LHX Attack chopper In the slow core version of DrMD @ 200mhz. Been playing for over an hour now, It`s only 4 yes 4fps, But its quit playable beleve it or not. It`s a chopper flight sim btw, So no need for high fps count.

Yes, it is damn cool!

If it wasn't for your lets-try-to-bugger-up-another-gp32 attitude I would never have had the guts to try this mod.

Yep, Thats the one, I also applied pencil on r48 the one above r52 as well, Though you may not need to.

so then wouldnt it eat up the same ammount of battery power at 1mhz as 200mhz?

Yes, But i would test your GP after you have erased the pencil first if it doesn`t work the first time, Before trying it again.

Well, after some trial some error, and a whole lot of 2HB Pentel 0.5mm graphite, I squeezed 220MHz out of my (previously 166MHz) BLU. It's Li-Ion modded (3.2v RCRV-3 rechargeable), if that would make any difference.
 
I don't want to try this on my FLU, because I don't know if I can get another FLU if I kill mine. Besides, mine already overclocks well.

Question, if I clean off a penny, and then adhease it to the back of the gp32's cpu with that thermal stuff, will that suffice as a heatsink? I'd rather spend 1 maybe 3 cents on a heatsink instead of 20 cents or however much it costs normally. :p

Also, does a heatsink allow some degree of protection (even if it's a little protection) against heat damage? It may allow the gp32 to overclock at a higher stability than without.

Also, another reason I don't do this mod is because although 200mhz is nice, the batteries last like 1 hour on that or whatever. (besides, I can overclock to that anyway. ^_^)

Do any good no. but yes it will work kinda like a heat sink u buy from a store.

The voltage could blow the CPU without producing much heat though. The transistors in the CPU are so small that they could blow way before a heat sink would do you any good.

Just like if you ran the GP32 on 9volts, no heat sink in the world would keep it from puffing.

No the faster you go the more power., But even at 1 MHZ if you put too much power through the CPU it would still blow.

Using this pencil trick you are putting too much power through the CPU. It may work for hours, days, maybe even longer but one day you will turn it on and POOF! gone forever.

Calculated, controlled volt-modding is one thing. Haphazardly tweaking the voltage to between 1.8v and who-knows-what is another.

My 224MHz test mule isn't complaining, though.

No, the ones that are done correctly with resistors are done so that the voltage is at or below recommended maximums. With this pencil mod you will most likely be over the operational limits which will result in premature failure of the CPU.

People just can't seem to resist getting something for nothing. They think that they are beating the system but in the end will end up costing themselves more when they have to buy a replacement after frying their unit. I didn't think buying a couple of resistors and putting them in was that big a deal. Go ahead then, have fun.

Actually even with the "official" voltmod is a slightly higher voltage to the recommended bounds.

Anyway Davec, you've said your piece (several times), loosen up a bit! :)
 
hmmm... looking better by the minute.

about those comments about people trying to cheat the system or get something for nothing... you CAN sometimes do this. Case in point, I was one of the guys who used a simple #2 pencil to bridge gaps on my AMD Athlon 2000+ processor, and because of that I was able to safely increase speed by quite a bit. Been running the processor that way for about 2 years now with no noticed ill effects.

So... I feel I have cheated the system quite nicely, thank you.

In the meantime... if someone's GP is gonna die from this please do it already so that the rest of us can be put of from trying this before ti's too late!

Okay well I decided to give this hack a shot.

First off let me mention I have a BLU + which seems to go to about 164mhz stably, as I can run DrMD at 164mhz for long periods and never locked up, but at 166 DrMD, Scumm and GP Engine will lock up after roughly 10-15 mins.

First let me say this mod is very sensitive to the amount of lead you put on there... with very minor changes I went from not being over to OC any more than stock, to only being able to go to 172mhz, to being able to clock to 200 and possibly more (this is the highest I tried), to not being able to run any apps (GP starts but pick an ap from the launcher and it reboots), to the system just locking up on startup.

This is what I found to work... I have to put a very light amount on the R52 resistor, less than the amount you see on the pic at the start of the thread, and then put a small amount on the R48, very little almost not enough to see, and only with a little on the R48 was I able to OC at all more than what I normally can. With that I can get to 176 but no higher.. then from there I very carefully add just very small amounts... just a stroke or two... again it's very sensitive... a little bit extra could mean 192mhz or could mean it will just not work at all. It's also very hard to repeat... I've undone and redone it a couple times and seriously it seems to work at random as I add and take away the lead.

I'm wondering if this really is dangerous... I mean, at least at one point I know now that the voltage didn't go up THAT much, since it would only support up to 176mhz w/o locking...

well... I'm gonna keep messing with it... it's really very sensitive and hard to find the exact right amounts to use... well hope I'm not the first to fry one!!

Concept - no I don't have the link for modding AMD processors... I did it so long ago, but do a google search I'm SURE it's all over the place.
