I seem to be one of the few people who actually likes 3D, and as such am looking to buy a vr headset. However, I want one that would work on the Prya. Don't get me wrong, I am not looking for gaming with it in the pyra. I just would like to be able to use it as an external monitor.

Do any headsets let you treat them as an external monitor and would work on the pyra as such? Any recommendations?

I somehow don't think the Pyra will be able to drive our standard VR headsets given they have 2 1920 * 1080 screens (Right now anyway as future CPU boards might be capable.)
Just get an external monitor and continue using your PC for VR.

It does not need to be that big though. I even just 720p would be fine. Are you saying there are no VR setups that can use hdmi as an external monitor at lower then max settings?

The OMAP5 is a pretty old SoC. I haven't tried it, but I have a hard time believing it will handle VR well at all. Someone with prototype hardware may have some VR hardware and can check it out though.

I know actual vr is to much. However, if it can decode 1080p, it should be able to do 720p sbs.

Aka, I don't really want it for games, I know that this is to much. However, if I get a headset, I would want one I can use as an external monitor as well.

The Gylph would work. However, it seems lile a shity VR system for games as well. Is there no good gaming headset that can work as an external monitor?

The original Oculus Rift did this. Starting with the DK2 they started using a special feature of video cards which wasn't just displaying HDMI directly: I don't fully understand other than it required a newer video card that supported this feature and was selected because it made display much faster. This was years ago that I researched it and I've long since forgotten exactly what the feature is named, but I find it highly unlikely that the OMAP5 is going to support it. I know the latest Oculus headsets and at least the original HTC Vive all require this feature: they don't work as simple monitors to just display what would be on the screen.

Are you sure it's not just the common HDMI version madness? HDMI 1.4, 1.4a and 1.4b introduced several 3D related stuff officially between '09 and '11, the most relevant was probably the support for YCbCr 4:2:2 in 1.4b, as this was essential to reach 60Hz on a 1080p 3D signal without increasing the available bandwidth. 1.4 only supported it with 24Hz officially.

I just ordered a "new in box" Avegant Glyph on Ebay for $120. Hope it works as a Pyra external monitor.
just checked these out.. ebay Au has only 1 set from a US seller in California.. $149USD for the headset and $30 for postage.. wow that over $260 AUD... not happening this month.. missed the import charge estimate of another $24USD.. so about $300 AUD all up.
thats what i get for living on an island half a world away

If I recall, in @2016 these were @$699... not sure why there are so many vendors selling these off a few dozen at a time.

Yeah, I'm positive. I'm trying to remember the details but it's been too long. It was something added with the GTX 650: despite the "minimum requirements" listing a 950 or higher, I was able to get it working reasonably well with some demos on a 650, but not a 600 or 550. The original rift developer kit could run on the 600 or 550 because it did exactly what's being asked about: it was just a fancy monitor; but the later ones, they do something special that goes beyond just displaying, needing something on the card to do something.

HTC Vive and Valve Index still have an extended mode which makes them appear as an additional screen. They still require SteamVR to be running, though, so no Pyra (OpenHMD may work for the Vive, but with severe limitations and no software support if you get it running). For good reason. Proper VR headsets are way more than just glorified screens these days.

To be honest, this doesn't sound like a great idea at all. You either have something that won't run with the Pyra, not even terribly, or you have something that if you manage to get it running, but be far from satisfying in resolution and comfort.
720p may work with that low field of view, thinking about it, but won't give you much to look at either.

I've personally found desktop viewing to be alright starting from Valve Index resolution (1600p, RGB subpixels). On the Vive (1200p, pentile subpixel layout) was only okay if the viewed media didn't require lot of details, but reading text on a desktop was painful.
I'm not stopping you and can't, but reading these numbers, it doesn't sound like a pleasant experience you've got yourself signed up for.

It might even be better to stream to some cardboard phone VR solution here, but I suppose that defeats the point.

The 650 is just recent enough to implement 1.4b (i.e.: either with a barely sufficient frequency or with chroma subsampling enabled - the 500 series is already too old for 1.4b), while the 950 already supports 2.0, which can do FullHD 3D with 48Hz even without chroma subsampling.

Yeah, reading up in HDMI it seemed to me that you'd need one of the more recent ones to support the sort of bitrates you need for vomit inducing free gaming. I guess that doesn't automatically mean it won't support basically static images over a slower standard, but I suppose that's not the main use so might not be supported, and I'm not actually sure that's what the OP wants anyway; on a big screen I move my eyes and my head to see from corner to corner, so is he actually looking for something like the cinema mode that was promoted with iirc the original rift.

But if WizardStan reckons it's not simply a matter of bandwidth, then I defer to him.

I am wanting a mobile monitor without a big screen to brake. I spend a hell of a lot of time just parked in my jeep, normally on my phone. So a way to have a "big screen" then would be awesome.

However, I also want an actual VR headset, and since the price of "video glasses" are $200+, I was hoping to kill 2 birds, as it were.
