Ghetto Shoulder Button Fix

As I'm sure many of you know, I sent my GP32 to Mashmods, hoping to fix my unresponsive R button, among other things. And when I got it back, it was only good for about 30 minutes, until it became horrifyingly unresponsive. So, then I set out to fix the darn thing myself.

Since I haven't opened my GP32 myself before, I think the installation would have been a lot easier, but, when I opened by GP32 up, I couldn't pull the back off all the way, I could only separate it one side by 1/4 inch. So, that made putting the button back a lot harder than I thought, it also caused me to temporarily mess up the power on/off switch (Scared the shit out of me, but don't worry, I fixed it :D ).

So, when I took out the shoulder button, I saw the actual R button:

I tried clicking it a few times just to check it out and it worked fine. So, my first thought was to leave the R button out and just use it like that, but, I had a feeling that would be too ghetto, so I took a look at the actual R button:

(When I first tried to take the R button out, that metal piece got loose and fell inside the GP32, so, after jiggling it around a bit, I managed to get it back out and put it back on)
Is it supposed to look like that? If so, that's a horrible design. Anyways, just to make sure I could, I put the shoulder button back on, and I noticed that it fell down instantly (there was nothing supporting it), so, it was too loose. At this moment, I thought maybe some piece that's supposed to support it fell into the GP32, unforuntately, I wasn't able to obtain it. So, I decided to make my own support, several folded pieces of paper:

(I tucked in the paper on the left side of the button before I put it back on)
So, after putting it back on, I got excellent results.

So, what do you guys think? I'm guessing something similar to this has been done before because it's a relatively simple solution that someone was bound to think of after looking at the button.

Well, I needed a fix right away, so it's not like I could go to an arts & crafts store or something and pick up something a little more "appropriate." I just saw a stack of paper on my desk and decided to try it out.

Hahaha.

I guess my gp32 will look f*cked up a fter a few years.

Stuffed with pieces of toilet paper an held together with tape.

No matter if the emu's keep working...

If you could only open the GP about 1/4 inch, did you take out the screws underneath the batteries?

It comes apart easily when all the screws are out.

I was too nervous to make I got everything (Thought I would mess it up, so I wasn't thinking very clearly).

LOL, I used to do this sort of thing with Speccy and Amiga joysticks all the time, the connectors always got bent with to much use. I'd forgotten! I'll have to give it a go on my 'A' button. It keeps sticking.

I just used this fix on my BLU -- it came with BOTH top buttons dodgy. I slipped some cardboard in, folded a few times and cut to shape -- works perfectly.

Thanks Azure!

I wonder if this would work on the face buttons? one of mine is ticking when ever i press it. It's doing my head in.

Nope - they work on a totally different principle - a rubber membrane thingy. If one is clicking, perhaps it has a little of the mould plastic still attached. May be worth taking your GP apart and taking a look. If you dont facy doing this, just live with it :)

I found it much easier with the back case totally off.

If you do take the back off, remember to unscrew the two screws under the battery compartment (as previous post said) and remember to take the smartmedia card out the slot. Plus check that the power switch dont fly out and make sure its back in before doing the screws back up.

Both legs of the metal bit may need bending; the one with the little circle press's the button, the other one is the leg that provide the button with all its spring.

wohoo! i just took the back case off my gp32 and did the "ghetto button fix"

my R button's metal was bent--the leg providing the button press was back further than the one providing the spring, lousy.

we'll see how long the tagboard lasts.

edit, couldn't help myself, here's a snap of the job:
