Hi there,

I tried a search and found a few messages about whatsapp on the Pandora, but I was wondering about it's use on Prya?
I presume that it will work fine?

This has probably been asked many times before and I apologize. I haven't logged on to the forum for quite sometime.

Shouldn't it be possible to run WA in an android container/VM?
Even doing the security check (or whatever they call it) would most likely be doable, as you can just enter the sms-code manually.

I second all the telegram vs whatsapp remarks, but yeah. Whatsapp's web client will run on the pyra too no doubt. I'm just hoping for a native client as the web client needs a phone client to be online.

It'll likely run on the Pyra, but you'll still need the Android phone for it to sync with.

The desktop client runs for sure as I use it with my Prototype.

I dislike that my Phone needs to be connected but I don't think it is useful to start a Whatsapp vs Telegram debate.
I would prefer Telegram but unfortunately so many people use Whatsapp that I don't want to switch completely.

I still don't even know what whatsapp even is

A mediocre IM service, dependent on proprietary message-distribution servers and a closed-source smartphone app. It's mostly a variant of XMPP, but the developers and maintainers are profit driven, and have an aggressive stance against reverse engineering efforts.

On the upside, it does have plausible end-to-end content encryption that "just works", making it a useful tool against invasive three-letter agencies.

I don't wanna seem rude, but seriously? The question of this thread is "is Whatsapp going to work on the Pyra (somehow)?" and NOT "does everyone around here hate Whatsapp?".
Yes, it is owned by FB and yes it's proprietary and no it doesn't have a proper desktop client. But, first of all, no one should feel entitled to tell everyone else what software they should/have to use,
and, second, some people just have to use it in order to not be left out. It's a choice of using free software and being a digital eremite, or software made by evil corporations in this regard.
This is very much like the discussion(s) about modding a camera inside the Pyra. It might surely be very impractical, but telling other people how YOU don't like/need a camera isn't going to change someone else's needs.
I find this kinda impolite, tbh, as it makes productive discussions about the topic at hand nearly impossible.

On a side note, Telegram is unfortunately not perfect, either. They haven't made their server-side software open source so far and regular chats don't use end-to-end encryption.

Some of us just like arguing online a bit too much, I reckon :)

That said, the question was answered and you are wrong. We should all go back to IRC.
I am entitled to tell you that just as much as you are entitled to ignore it.

To add a more serious note, I am a bit split on the stance to take.
On the one hand, yes, friends are on a certain platform and/or network and not joining that means one is left out. I know all about it.
On the other hand, as technical savvy people we play a role in educating people on the positives and negatives of certain choices.

So, less opinion, more facts... I am not familiar with either of the networks. Though I know more people using whatsapp.

That is a good point indeed. Personally, the main reason why I haven't removed WA from my phone so far isn't even friends, but (larger) WA
groups that consist of people I'm not that close to, mainly classmates. I can always contact my friends one way or another, but I doubt I'd manage to convince
20-90 people at once to switch to another messenger just for this group. The fact that my fellow CS students all joined a WA-group no questions asked was kinda disappointing, though.
