...developers are so pissed about the GP32 community that they would not release a final version of their product for the GP32, but for any other platform such as Windows, Playstation 2, Linux, etc... caused by:

* too less feedback
* too many lame questions, but there is a description and faq's
* praising emulators more than "real" games for the gp32
* telling bad stuff to the developers

And now you... what would you say? Would you accept such a decision of the developers?

(And no, I won't tell the "product" name...)

I'd be annoyed for the dev, He (or she) works really hard on a project just to see it mouthed off. WTF? This happens all too much in alot of communitys.

But if I worked on a project I dont think I could not release it, it would seem like a waste to me. But it is the coders choice.

The thing is if the Dev is pissed at the community, he doesnt and probably wont release his work, its a real shame to see Dev's use there spare time to code free games for a community, and then feel they arnt appreciated :(

Well, to answer your question, yes, I'd accept that decision. For the following reason: I have to accept it, I can bitch about it but that won't do any good. If a developer thinks the community isn't worthy of his product, then so be it.

Now about those points you mentioned.

Not enough feedback: True, people rarely take the time to use beta releases for what they are ment for: beta testing.

Too many lame questions: Personally, not a real reason. Usually these questions come from newbies expecting everything from a developer, and I think by now the developers know by now not to pay attention to those lamers...

Praising emulators more then "real" games for the gp32: Which is true, I catch myself doing it every now and again. But then I think about games like Electronia, and I praise Akuma No Houkon again for his GOOD games, for the GP32. Falldown is one of my favorite games, Vertical, excellent game. etc. etc.

Telling bad stuff to the developers: Uhm... :S

the lame questions can not be helped. theres always gonna be the idiot newbs who fail to even read the readme. i understand about the feedback. i see people releasing games asking for feedback and people are too lazy to even do that, not realising that its the least they can do for a free game (i am one of these people unfortunately). praising emulators more than "real" games can not be helped. if you ask people why they got their gp32 most of them they say because of the emulators, not to mention it opens up a whole library of games that people feel close to because it might have been the first system they owned etc etc. there are a few games, however that i feel are really excellent and would prefer a final version of them than an emulator (giana's return being top of the list). telling bad stuff to developers is just plain wrong / stupid. its only a certain few that do this though and this shouldnt reflect on the whole community since 70% of people definately appreciate ALL the work that developers do no matter how small.

as this dev has already decided to not release it, i'm guessing i can say this without offending them more.

i'd say that this was probably a case of ego and dev error.

* too less feedback

its pointless releasing a program here (on these boards) and asking for feedback, its a very wide reaching community, a fair amount of users have no interest or idea of the devving community, a far better bet would be irc #gp32dev and at a strecth #gp32

* too many lame questions, but there is a description and faq's

again, this is a board for all users, your going to get the "lame questions"

* praising emulators more than "real" games for the gp32

arrogance and emu. so what if people praise emus more than games? same levels of time and effort can be put into both, its personal preference for gods sake.

* telling bad stuff to the developers

this i could understand would annoy people, tbh though, round here i don't see much (if any) dev criticism, just the lame questions like whens the next release.

so as you can see, i've got very little sympathy for whoever it is, the program hasn't been released, we don't seem to be suffering because of it!

there is always going to be

*crappy feedback
*lame questions
*peope praising emulators over "real" games
*telling bad stuff about developers

amongst the constructive feedback

as long as there is more good feedback than bad then jobs a good un.

maybe there should be a list of the developers on the website and a "mood" gauge so we can see when some devers are getting pissed of so we can offer morale support.

as this dev has already decided to not release it, i'm guessing i can say this without offending them more.
I would not say that too loud... probably the threat might change the mood of the developers I am talking about. You know... there is always a last chance...

That's exactly the point: Don't ever bite the hand that's feeding you, or, if you don't care about that product, the hand that's feeding others.

Everything is down to:

1 - Money
2 - Passion
3 - Oportunity
4 - Talent

On GP32 development you have things like:

free EMUS - 2,4
homebrew - 2,4
Commercial games - 2,3,4

Emotions and a little opportunity drive most of the development on GP32 not money. Based on that fact if the dev gets pissed his emotions turns upside down and he stops coding, "if this thing dont love me why I bother with this thing?"

I dont see point 1, Money, anywhere on GP32 software scene, look at other platforms where millions are invested, video game industry are on level with, drugs, military. There is no video game industry on GP32.

Go and call $#@ to id or EA and see if they care...

oh come on!

what the fuck is this?

would you prefer it if i got down on my knees any made the dev feel better by pleasuring him.

look, i'd have far more respect for the dev if the came out and just said what they felt, not have someone else posting on a board delivering mild threats.

[cartman] seriously, you guys, this is like, totally weak [/cartman]

If you dev for the GP32 then do it for yourself. Do it because you want to. What other people say doesn't matter. If you like what you've produced that's what matters. Don't expect joe public to bother praising you because most of them can't be bothered. They may well think your game/project is the best thing in the world but if they don't tell you this does it it matter? Does it make the project any less playable/useful?

I've created loads of graphics, music and short stories most of which has never seen public release because I do it for myself. If anyone else likes my stuff then fine if not I don't care because I like it and that's what matters.

I would say maybe 90% of all the developers for the GP32 already don't release their final versions for reasons unkown and I'll explain why.

First of all, look at all the coding competitions, so many games, so many that are crap. BUT, if they were just worked on a little more they would be great games, but after the compo is over and they lose, the whole project gets abandoned. Nothing more will probably come out of opensnes9x, and with FGen being as good as it is, I don't see Dave doing that much more with Gigadrive because hey, whats the point.

I just think since maybe the GP32 is more of a hobby piece, that people who do code just don't want to put in the time to make a quality game. Its not the community as a whole, its just people are lazy.

- If people really want feedback they should ask for it, and be very specific about what they want feedback about (no professional company will beta-test produsts with 'what do you think'). They should also be willing to accept negative feedback and not punish the testers by withdrawing their creation when the responses are negative.

- Lame questions? This forum has a gazillion posts about lame questions, there is no way to avoid this.

- Of course emu's get a lot of praise, one emu opens up the abillity to play hundreds of games created by professionals. How would you want to compete with that? Most GP32 games are never finished and you can't expect a lot of praise for a half-baked game.

- Bad stuff? I have seen many emu developers (they get all the praise, right?) quit their emu's because of this. If you can't take the heat... Is this bad stuff being told by everybody or just one or two people?

If someone decides to withdraw whatever he is creating from the GP32 and move to another platform because of those four reasons he is just going to run into the same problems again.
This is not a platform based problem, the GP32 community isn't any worse (or better) than any other community. If you really can't deal with those four points maybe you shouldn't create anything at all.

Hmm... I think I know pretty sure who the coder and the game is... but nevertheless.

I must say:
I would be sad.
It's the decision of the coders - but EVERY abandoned project makes me sad.

I just wouldn't understand why...

One thing, I say to most coders, when they do a project and are pissed off:
DON'T expect any positive feedback!
A common problem in this world is that MOST PEOPLE can only complain.
If someone LIKES anything, he'll play it and most don't say a word of praise.

But the people who DON'T like it, mostly ALWAYS complain.

Say, you have about 1000 people who love it and play it - about 10 will praise you.
You have about 500 people who don't like it - about 100 of them will complain.

That's a common problem - I don't like it, but it's nearly impossible to change.

I plan to do more to GigaDrive for a couple of reasons:

1) It's not primarily a GP32 project, it's a multi-format project. For example it runs on Nokia Series 60, Pocket PC and Xbox.

2) fGen crashes in the rom scan screen on my GP32 :-(

I think the reason why there are very few games on the GP32 is that the system is more of a homebrew system and isn't currently being sold in shops in the US or Europe.
Also there is the problem of piracy, games would be very easy to crack and pirate. The GP32 is effectively modded straight out of the box.

This isn't a bad thing in my opnion, the GP32 is kind of like a homebrew GBA.

this is a sad thing
it's not like it doesnt matter what the others say (i thought that at the beginning)
everyone will get pretty damn pissed if they work their ass off for weeks, months or even years, are statisfied with their work and then someone tells them it's shit..
the lame questions while there are readme and faqs instead of feedback-thing is also damn fucked..

spray:
wtf?
what was the last app/game/demo/whatsoever that you released?
maybe thats true and the dever, those who hold the gp32 intact should only release their s/w in #gp32dev
oh yes, GREAT idea
also ppl shouldn't waste time on trying to use the gp32s real capabilities with innovative game-ideas and nice graphics, but should just write and contribute to emulators..
emulators are nice (want os9xgp fullspeed myself ^^), but nothing is better than original games
Edit:
also noone asks about falling on the knees infront of the devr, just realising that you're an asshole and saying sorry is enough :p

rtb7:
thats pretty damn fucked..
i can remember your pretty impressive 3d-demo, its now going to waste like "nice, but can you do something else then run aroud?"
i dont have too many competition without it ^^
the ngpc is a nice system, wish you luck with future-deving

Edit:
raven:
uhm, how to say this, right
your post sucks -_-
even if all the communities are the same lazy gimme-roms-pricks, that doesnt mean you have to accept it
what do you think, how many devr would quit if they're all like
"oh well cant be helped, i'm off"
the gp32 would die faster then you can find a way to express the buttons psx-pad with latin characters only
there are enough willing ppl in this community and the rest can get changed or will just get ignored

Hmm, after reading through this thread, maybe we should all make a little more effort to praise developers when we enjoy their work. There's no point complaining about the problem if you're not willing to do something about it. A simple email wouldn't tkae more than a minute to type up and might make somebody's day.

If your not allowed to give an honest opinion. Whats the point of having an opinion in the first place.

Something posted on a discussion forum is surely there to be discussed honestly.

I certainly wont walk on eggshells in fear of offending someone with my thoughts.

If something upsets you then tell the person who said it to p**s off and get over it.
