I love these games and have been trying to find the best versions to play on the gp32, I've found:

ghosts'n'gobins
C64 - best ver imo
NES
ST - wierd smaller view that other versions

ghouls'n'ghosts
C64 - the best music!
SMS - a redone version, not bad
Genesis - best ver, plays great in fgen
ST - not arf bad but low brightness lets it down

super ghouls'n'ghosts
SNES - just doesn't have the same feel for me

Anyone found any others that might be better, I want to settle on one version and attempt to play them through. Only wish we had a mame release that they worked on, also I can't get the pcengine/turbografix versions to work which is a real shame

Are there are any other similar games that fit the bill, one I found is the sword and the rose on the ST which is ok

They are some of my favorites of all time. I've played Ghosts'n'Golins on fMAME, and it's great (if still a bit slow) - the arcade version is best.

Super ghouls'n'Ghosts is pants. Typical example of Nintendo trying to 'superize' something and fecking it up at the same time. Genesis version of Ghouls'n' Ghosts is the best cos. like you said, the brighness is a bit low on the ST.

I've had a private beta of fMAME since the British meetup - was given to me by Rlyeh to show at the meet, but not to distribute.

Cant recall offhand which games work though - will try to get the time to bung it on my SMC later and have a look.

Ghouls n Ghosts is my favourite game... I've been playing the PC Engine version recently... pity it doesn't work on GPEngine....

i still think SNES version was fun. not as satisfying as the genny vers. but still a good time with some memorable moments, definitely a worthy continuation of the series.

but DAMN if the first one isn't the hardest one ever!! I never could beat it... (g n g)

io would love to see it running (arcade) on GP32 someday, here's hoping

Don't forget the Beats of Rage version. Personally I think the NES is far superior to the rest.

It's an odd game though, Ghosts'n'Goblins, in that it is a popular game but a stupidly hard one too. I have played it on and off on many different systems for close to 20 years and I have never seen stage 3.

If you ask me, the PC Engine version of Ghouls n Ghosts is better than the Genesis version slightly, it has more color and looks a little better. Thing is, it was made for the SuperGrafx and GPengine has no SuperGrafx support. You could always play it on the PC with MagicEngine though.

Super Ghouls'n'Ghosts is excellent - it's a bit slow in PAL mind you. The double-jump adds a lot to gameplay! I think Capcom did it themselves instead of Nintendo, though I might be wrong...

My favourite version is the Megadrive version though!

thought I'd give the pcengine another try with PCEGP beta 2 and I almost thought it was going to work, loaded fine but when you start the game the graphics are mangled badly. I guess there's not a .pce format rom, only the sgx one...

But I've now tried Ghosts'n'Goblins on the Gameboy colour and it's actually pretty sweet, runs pretty good but it's waaaaaay easier than the others, I got to the end of level 2 first go! of course the screen size is cut down and a little annoying but quite a nice conversion

Looking forward to a genesis emu with sound to make the megadrive version even better ;)

OMG ... You mean there's a version of Mame with GnG running on the GP32 right now?? ..... *drooooool* .... gimme gimme gimme :) Has the project a homepage? GnG is one of my all time favourite arcade games. I used to play it during school breaks every day for ages. But I still have never managed to get past the flying devil (or whatever it is) at the end of level 5  ...

By the way, there is also a ZX Spectrum version of GnG. It doesn't look much like the arcade version ;) , but as I remember it , it was pretty good.

Totally biased C64 opinions !!!

I've tried Ghost n Goblins on the C64 and Speccy, i find 'jumping' in the C64 harder as you cant press 'right and jump' if you are against a wall whereas you can in the Speccy one i think. No way is Ghost n Goblins the best on the C64, the graphics are way too blocky.

Agree with Ghouls n Ghosts on the Genesis, very good it is. I think its Ghost n Goblins (not Ghouls n Ghosts) on the Gameboy Colour that is pretty decent.

SUCH a hard game though !!

Just tried out the c64-versions and MAME-versions today (on PC), and I also have to agree with the jumping-problems. But I figure this to be easier if you configure "up" to the "b"-button on Frodo.
I just played it for the music anyway which as always kicks ass on the c64.... And Ghouls & Ghosts on c64 has a different song for each level so thats pretty cool.

I don't know if you (psj3809) actually follow Froliks link, which I think is less "C64-biased" than his first comment... which is fairly dated... A lot of new emulators has arrived since then. I think he rates the ST-version higher than the c64-version of Ghost & goblins.

As a whole I personly just find this game to hard to actually be playable, so I never got the "hype" about this game.

I've always liked this game despite hardly getting anywhere on the Speccy version !

I do like the arcade version though and some of the other console versions are very good. I actually did enjoy completing the C64 versions thanks to cheats just to see the later levels.

Some of the arcade games on the Atari ST are excellent, specially Bubble Bobble
