So on my usual poke around zodiacgamer.com i see a post about the new release of LJZ, the snes/gb/gbc hybrid created by yoyofr from the original little john and os9xgp for the zodiac.

-Clickety click- i go to read about it on the discussion board and

HOLY COW!

hes only gone and incorporated a megadrive/genesis emu into the crazy thing!

And this isnt some minor test thing, from what i've gather hes got save states and screen streching and awesomely high compatibility already.

The megadrive/genesis is based on fdave's core and he thanks both rlyeh and fdave for their help increating LJZ.

My mind then began to wander a little...

So os9xgp was entered into an old GBAX compo and many assumed that if the new release is completed that it would win hands down the extended compo. I thought the same but began to question it, afterall os9xgp was brilliant from the start, would the team choose this.

Now we see a multi console emu getting more and more advanced on the z. Rlyeh and fdave are ultimately after the same thing and i detailed in other posts how it seems fdaves got the gaming power whilst rlyeh has shown on his other emus he can brilliantly create all the little things like save states, zip support and sound that make an emu great, i thought why dont these two join forces and create a great emu.

Now the two of them plus yoyofr are working together to create what seems to be every early 90s gamers wet dream! GB/GBC/NES/SNES/GEN emu. While they're there they may as well implement SMS/GG support into the fold as you've got the ultimate emu....

So now i'm back to reality.

Is it possible that LJZ will make it to the gp32???

Heres to hoping.

a multi-emulator on gp32 would be stupid, because gp32 has only 8mb ram limit and the snes part even takes with asm more than 4mb, how do you want to fit all the other emus + the rom there? ;)
yes, the worst thing on the gp32 is the damn ram limit.

probably not, with the power of the zodiac, its gonna be hard to come back to something like the GP after toying with the Zodiac. I think its only a matter of time before I sell my GP32 and buy a Zodiac.

The most important news is that the ASM core for SNES is in, which he can easily add to the GP32 version.

@pip:read the damn news, os9xgp already has asm
It says on the news it is not implemented or finished yet.

- find a way to fit the whole new stuff in the 8Mb (currently the asm cpu core + the gfx transparency code + 4Mb rom is too much).

Wolfsclaw, you forgot the most important part.

- fix the remaining buggy opcodes (ADC/SBC used to update score in game for ex)

I.e. it was not finished at that time.

I wonder what Yoyo has done to it to make it run so well. The GP32 Genesis emu uses the same core but it is choppy WITHOUT sound. Yoyos emu runs smoother WITH sound. He must be taking advantage of the sound chip or something. Or his other non cyclone code is much better. It may just be that the GP32 is just not quite strong enough to run a Genesis/Snes emu with decent speed AND sound. There are other great emus though.

I have tried this on a Zodiac, and yes, it does rock. However, games are still jerky with the sound turned on and I've had it fall over more than once.

At the moment, I'd prefer Gigadrive to Yoyo's Genesis emu :)

He must also be using a newer version of the CPU core as games that run on his emu crash on Gigadrive, like Gunstar Heroes.

Gunstar Heroes runs fine on the newest version of Gigadrive, it is you who are not using a new version :)

I am not sure if his has an analog sensitivity control on LJZ but you really need it. The control sucks with the default analog sensitivity, it is too sloppy.

I played with Gigadrive and it is good it is just that I can't stand playing games without sound, it just sucks. It may be that it won't be at a playable framerate on the GP32 with sound, ever. I mean if it is already choppy now without sound, with sound it would run dreadful. Rlyeh and/or fdave would know for sure what the limits will be but I haven't heard their prediction on that.

No it runs like it is stuck on FS 4. If you compare it to a Genesis emu running on a PC you will see that ther are alot of animation "in between" frames missing, most notible in fast games like sonic. It is only running at around 18 FPS it seems. It lacks the smoothness found in other emus like PC Engine.

It is certainly playable now but after sound is added it will be unplayable unless some magic is performed somewhere.

That slight choppiness only seems to happen in extreme situations (Sonic 3 & Knuckles, for instance), and running fullspeed @ FS2 or so is still an achievement. Most games (including Sonic 1/2) run in the 25~50 FPS range. Still nowhere near FS4 (which'd be 12 FPS NTSC/10 FPS PAL - Gigadrive is much faster than that)
