Word Of Mouth?

Anyone try starting discussions on Pandora in other forums?

Successes? Failures?
The Pandora already has its own forums on DCemu and Zodttd's site. It's been brought up on the Gizmondo forums, though has not had the best reception (Most people here have a low opinion of the Giz and aren't afraid to say so, myself included). Engadget has posted a few articles on the Pandora (1 2 3 4), and the comments were primarily neutral with a few swinging to negative or positive. There was a thread on the Llamma repair forums that didn't go very well. The thread at Maxconsole was an all-out flamefest.

There have probably been posts on PSP and DS-centric handheld sites as well, but I don't follow any and I'm sure they weren't supportive. Most of the sort of people who really need to know about the Pandora right now already do. After there are actual finished Pandoras in the wild to show off you might want to point to some reviews on other forums, but for now there isn't much need for that kind of publicity. Most gamers are already financially (and in some cases, emotionally) invested in a platform. They don't want to hear about something better and will tend to disbelieve its existence without significant proof.

Ugh... after reading through that thread at maxconsole that was linked... wtf. Seriously, wtf. I got through about 4 pages then couldn't take any more. Most of the complaints boil down to one of three things.
1: "ZOMG it's not teh PSP! PSP 4 eva!" or "PSP can alraedy liek do teh PSX emulashun and play teh N64 gamez!!!!!" Fanboyism. Also I wasn't aware PoC was equivalent to playable.
2: "Its liek teh ugly!111oneoen" I never really understood this mindset. Maybe it's because I'm a geek, but I tend to base my gadget decisions around what it can do, not what it looks like. Handhelds aren't jewelry, you're supposed to use them, not admire them as a piece of art.
3: "I is too stoopid to read teh post and find out it does haz teh touchscreenz!!!" Self explanatory.

Seriously, the concentration of ignorance and idiocy is mind-numbing.

Mainstream console forums are almost always depressing places to be. That's one of the really nice aspects of niche devices like the GP's, Zodiac, Pandora etc. - you've got a generally older, more tech savvy crowd of enthusiasts on the relevant forums.

I can't stand most game forums these days. Seems like most people really go to fight, and about really stupid things.

Its been discussed on yakyak (jeff minters forum) and had good things said about it.

Nice post Chip - how do you keep track of all these links, posts etc?

How funny is it when people are denying somethings existence and capabilities; when they will not let you say anything that is disagreeing with their choice.

And we would never, ever fight here. ;)

To be honest, if weren't a long-time member of this community, i'd probably dismiss the Pandora as vaporware as well. Add to that the fact that 99% of visitors of mainstream gaming forums are 14 year old boys who fear their precious PSP might be affected by the advent of the Pandora, think the PSX is really oldschool, and use forums as a means of venting their frustration over how noone takes them serious or school is way too hard.
Then, on forums visited by a more adult audience, they'll see it as a mini laptop and think it´s just some EEEpc ripoff.

PSX is oldschool? I'm only 17 and even I don't think of PSX as oldschool! Probably because I didn't get a PSX till 2000. Got NES in 1993, and then I got a Genesis in 1995. SNES maybe in 1997. I guess there was a pretty large gap between console releases and my procurement of them. The SNES thing worked our pretty well though. There was a place nearby that rented SNES games for $1 or $2 for 5 days. I got to play a lot of good stuff that way.

I do think NES, SNES, and Genesis are old school, which many people on this forum would probably not agree with.

Getting back on topic, maybe people would be more receptive to Pandora in gadget forums as opposed to DS, PSP or mainstream gaming forums.

Wow, you're so right. I think I about cried over the level of these people's fanboyness. The comment about needing a better Dpad like the PS2's dPad got me. Sony couldn't make a good dPad if their lives depended on it, never have, never will. And this person wants one of theirs?!?

PS2 DPAD? ARE THEY NUTS?

Anyone ever sit down and try to play some Street Fighter III or something with that controller? My thumb gets messed up like that. It's so difficult to pull off simple shoryukens or the special moves. I wanted to buy the Street Fighter Anniversary Controllers, cuz they had really good D-Pads...they were pretty much Sega Saturn controllers made for PS2. They were selling for like $10 at Game Crazy, but I never got around to it...tis a shame. Could've been useful on Pandora. Maybe I'll check back with them.

You know, it's not like it's got the best dPad, but the Nerf wireless controller for the PS2 doesn't have that bad of a dPad. It fits my limited dPad needs on the PS2. Not to mention that aside from that, the Nerf controller is perfect! ^_^

I tried to create a thread on the ixbt.com forum (a very famous Russian IT site) but with no luck. There was only one reply. I guess it's to early to discuss this device elsewhere aside from this forum coz it's not out yet. I also tried to advertise the P among my friends. Their opinion is mostly like that "it's promising but we'll see how it goes" or "I'm afraid you won't be able to port some specific software - better buy a more pricey atom based mid".
All I know is when I show the the real device and it's outstanding capabilities, performance and duration of plugless work they will be shocked.

My friends reactions were more along the lines of:
  • I'll wait and buy it once it has a good library
  • I just don't have the money right now... :\
  • SHUT UP ABOUT THE F***ING PANDORA, YOU TALK ABOUT IT EVERY GODDAMN DAY![/exaggeration]

Yes probably. Could be a real hit with gadget fans. Looking at some of the other forums makes you want to ask people not to mention Pandora there.

3 actually, yeah (born in September 1990). I have a lot of memories of it though. I played it plenty even after getting the Genesis. You'd be surprised how many games you can find at garage sales :p

The games I remember best...SMB 1+2 and Duck Hunt of course, Zelda I and II (had the gold cartridge), mega man 6, Top Gun, Metroid, Shadowgate, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games, Ninja Gaiden, Dragon Ball game (yea, my cousin had the version of the Dragon Ball game that they released in the USA, it was called Dragon Power), Yoshi puzzle game...I know I had loads more games but I can't remember them atm. I sold them all for $75 to gamestop a long time ago. I think I regret that now...

Not that it means much, but I've started coming here after some recommendations to look into this from other regulars on GameFAQs PSP board.

Before they banned talk of homebrew I suspect news of this device would have been welcomed on both the PSP and the DS's boards as both were heavily influenced by homebrew and discussion of emulators was a rather regular thing. With that change in place, I doubt the remaining members would do much more then assume the Pandora is banned under the new change, mark it and move on.

When this device is released there are places like qj.net that would probably be fruitful places to visit and have some discussion of this device as well as some of the developer oriented websites for handheld gaming devices (PSP, DS, GBA) though I doubt I will be among those to do much to spread the word.

Old school for me would be Intellivision. Anyone here have B-52 Bomber, with the voice cart? lol....

Maxconsole in general is a flamefest. Who here honestly expected better?

Yeah, I never really liked Maxconsole either.

My favorite forums would probably be this one, Anandtech, gbadev.org (when I used to have my DS), and gamemilitia.com, which is kinda dead right now.

I've never tried any of the games on realllly old school consoles like intellivision, commodore64 or atari. Now that I think about it, that's really quite a shame. As soon as I find/make a replacement joystick cap for my GP2X I should try those systems out.

BEE-FIFTY-TOO BOWMBUHRR!!!

God, loved that shit back in the day. :p

Kyo and myself have been plugging the Pandora over at the Benheck.com forums in this thread. The sentiment about the device is mostly positive, with most people committing to buy one ASAP. The only real complaint is the price and the fact that most people own (or in the case of Benheck, built) a device that does similar things already. They'll be swayed to our side soon enough, methinks. :D

Personally, I think it went over here so well because it's a community that's generally older and more geared toward electronic/software engineering to begin with; a project like this is one that gets people of similar mindset motivated. One of the few forums I visit anymore simply because our active members (well, most of them) are fairly mature.
