Hi guys, I finally managed to get myself a GP32 BLU. Havn't been able to use it yet as I don't have any SMC cards but they're on the way. Which USB does the GP32 use? Is it a mini 4-pin USB type A or type B? It looks like a type B but I want to be sure before I order one.
I'm sure I'll have more questions in the near future as from what I've read it looks to be a bit different from using a GP2X or a Wiz etc.

Also, I accidently started the same thread in the F.A.Q. section, could a Mod delete that one? It's waiting to be reviewed by one of you guys.

It`s neither type A or B, It`s proprietary if i remember correctly. I still have my GP32s, But have
not used the cables in Aaawww... seven years, And not too sure if i still have them.

Do you know if it (your GP32) has already been flashed with a custom firmware ?.

Try holding the "START" button whilst switching it on. You should see a monochrome
text menu if it has, Thus no need for the USB cable, As you can just transfer stuff
(programs etc) directly onto the SMC via a card reader.

If no text menu appears, Then i guess you are going to need the special GP32 USB cable.

Deal extreme sell or used to sell them, And there was a link to the specific cable posted
here quite a while back.

I`ll have a look and see if i can find it. :)

Hi Trooper, Orkie posted about this adapter which I ordered, http://www.dealextreme.com/p/usb-adapter-4pin-440
The only thing is I can't tell if it has a male or female connector, of course it doesn't show you the reverse side.

It looks like a standard 4 pin mini usb to me, you don't think so? http://www.amazon.com/USB-2-0-4-Pin-Mini-Cable/dp/B00112CJZA/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1297038011&sr=8-11

No, my unit hasn't been flashed before. Tried the hold "select" thing but all that does is turn the backlight on and off. Holding "start" does nothing as well. I think it was a refurb because I bought it from Ebay but the seller was GP2Xstore.

Hi Orion,

I see what you mean now, That adaptor that Orkie recommended from Deal Extreme is probably a mini B connector, But the GP32`s port is slightly different (Possibly proprietary).

Quoted from Orkie`s Deal Extreme review:

Can be used as a replacement for the official GP32 USB cable if inserted upside down (still fits fine).

So it is not really the right connector for the GP32, But will work with a firm push, When inserted upside down. :)

How different that adaptor is compared to a mini B plug, I have no idea, But i would be very careful if you were to try a standard mini B plug in your GP32.

Hope this helps

From what I can see the lead looks like a good match.

The GP 32 connecter (at the GP32 end), has a bit of a notch, hence the suggestion for a "push to fit".

Tried, and failed again.

Shall delete, after a week from now.

Glad you got your BLU.

Strange, I'm looking at the unit and I don't see what that notch on the connector would be for. I mean there's no raised piece that the notch on your cord would fit over. Maybe the earlier NLU's & FLU's USB ports are different? Which model(s) do you own?

I have two GP32 BLU`s (NOT BLU+`s), And here are a couple of pictures of the connector
on the GP32. I would not know where to start looking for my GP32 USB cables, So can`t
provide pictures of their connectors.

trooper: Thanks for posting the pics.

The NLU, has the protrusion on the unit, it would be in line with the letter "U", in "USB", this is for the notch on the lead, to mate with.

The BLU, is more accommodating, and can accept the connector without any "push to fit" (with any force). Looking at the connector on the unit, and as pictured (by you), GamePark, must have revised the BLU, so it could accept more than their own bundled lead, as it has no interfering protrusion, for the lead to then have the requisite notch.

Orion4874: The notch as mentioned is on the NLU unit only, and is now a redundant issue. Sorry, I did not look at a BLU, before, but thanks to trooper, posting his pics it is clearly obvious (to me) now (verified with a BLU too).

You should be okay with the suggested lead you are enquiring about.

Really sorry, I always grab a NLU, when I check an issue, and take it for granted, that physically all GP32's are the same (still learning after all these years).

As a side note, I like to format with the unit then put the card in a card reader, and add the files. I suppose via the lead you will want to format a card first, then perhaps put the flasher on the card with a better firmware, then the fun begins. It would be fascinating to hear of your opinion of this veteran handheld, and how it holds up to your other devices.

EDIT: Owns NLU,BLU,BLU+ (12 at last count).
RE-EDIT: Also Own FLU (total for all units combined is 12, sorry for not being clearer).

Asteroid, Glad the pictures were useful. :)

Bloody hell, 12-15 GP32`s   , I have 2 x BLU`s and a dead NLU (somewhere),
And thought that was enough. Nothing wrong with a few spare GP32`s i suppose.

Thanks guys, you both helped me out. Sitting here waiting for the smc cards and cable adapter to arrive so all I can do is just look at the unit for now..... kind of sucks!

So that's why GP32's rarely show up on the open market, Asteroid owns most of them! ;)

Trooper, I just realized you're a Maiden fan. Saw them a couple of years back and I must say that Dickenson can still sing his ass off for someone getting up there in years. It was funny, he told the crowd that it was ok to take pictures and video them on stage. Also doesn't mind that people download and share their music. Basically, he was giving it to another well known band for turning their backs on their fans(I wonder who he was talking about).
