i tried to use a gif image for my windups background but it just shows up as a blur or a negative? what is this gp32 palette format i've been hearing about?

There is a specific 256 color palette that it uses.

Download this PNG image and look at its palette.

That image contains the "standard" 256 color GP32 palette.

If you are using paint shop pro, I can email you the palette file.. PM me if you do.

...and boy, does it suck! I was going to do a gMame icon, but I shan't bother now. I knocked together a quick Gamepark spiral with "Mame" slapped across it. Tried to work with that palette and it just looks a mess.

The default palette is not crap. If you know anything about programming, you will realise that the GP32 default palette is actually a color look up table. It's layed out that way so that 24bit/16bit colors can be convereted into a palette index on the fly.

The thing is, the palette is able to be changed, and also there is a very nice 16bit mode. A program like Windups should definatly be using 16bit as there is no real benefit for using 8bit when speed is really not a major consideration. I am exclusively using 16bit color, and although its slower to manipulate than 8bit, it's not significantly slower.
