Personally, I can't help but think that the problems are a bit exaggerated. I have a feeling that a few bad units got shipped out, and since it's such a small community and the community is the device's selling point, we're hearing about each and every one of those bad units.

Won't know for sure until ours start arriving though. Well, that or Craig tells us what his experience has been so far =)

EDIT: To clarify, I'm referring to the hardware issues, not the firmware issues.

To the best of my knowledge, no GP2X has ever exploded, killing it's owner.

Seriously though, there are no "real" problems with the device. There are a few fixable issues and misunderstandings that could happen to any device that was rushed out the door at the last minute to meet an overwhelming demand by a rabid fanbase.

In a few months, someone will look back and say "Hey, remember when the X2 came out and everybody went batshit over nothing?"

"LOL! That was funny" somebody will reply.

Then there will be about a dozen irrelevant, single-word replies left by post whores. After that, all this horror will be forgotten and we can move on to speculating over the GP3X.

 I won't reveal my source, but apparently the boxes have a BUG, it turns out you can't fit everything back in the box to the same fashion as when you first unpacked it!

On a serious note, this handheld is going to be great, it will take a little ironing out at first, but stick with it. :)

The GP32 went through several changes in firmware and didn't become what it is overnight. It took many talented coders to show it's potential.

We have that to look forward to again with a new platform in the GP2X. :D

It's going to be one hell of a RIDE! B)

 CAn someone tell me what is good about the gp2x after all these bugs and such?

Well, everything that was good about the GP2X prior to this first batch having problems is still what is good about the GP2X.

The best thing about the GP2X of course, is the established homebrew community and developers, such as Woogal who has ported Quake already, and Squidge and DJWillis who are involved with creating firmware that bypasses Linux to allow faster software.

Also, the price, can't complain about that, and the unit itself looks sexy and apart from the teething problems at the moment still seems to be the best designed handheld considering its form factor and ergonomics.

The functionality for amateur homebrewer's to get into development themselves, such as Fenix (coming soon to GP2X) and the Waffle virtual novel system, are unsurpassed in other handheld homebrew communities.

GPH, although recently making some errors of judgement with the release of a not properly tested unit and also this GPL issue with the firmware, seem to be very attentive to the community's needs.

There are also dedicated providers of related gadgets with GBAX, GP32z and GP2x Shop, which in time will likely be an excellent source of additional add-ons for the GP2X independent of GPH.

Last but not least, the active and passionate community. Which I'm sure aren't usually so touchy, quick to react, and sometimes downright rude to newcomers. After all, the release of the GP2X has attracted many new people to the community, and a knee jerk reaction in the face of the recent uncertainties is to be expected.

Although, certain people who have painted me as a "GPH basher" can take issue zero of GP2Brew and shove it where the sun don't shine. Gawd.

So, no need to panic, but also no need to self censor over recent events either. An independent voice is the driving force of any homebrew community, and I believe that the GP32/GP2X community is at the peak of a rollercoaster ride that's going to roll our favourite handhelds out to a world that will be surprised and excited to have an alternative to Sony and Nintendo.

So hang on ;)

The most positive thing is that nobody who counts has given up! There's a lot of negative sounding reports, but I reckon a lot of that is just people who want to kick up a fuss rather than real news. It'll be a great device.

Each day I get more and more positive about the GP2X :D

I held off pre-ordering in case of first-batch niggles (yeah, I'm a wimp! But being in Australia it's expensive to ship back for an exchange), but if what has been reported (even exaggerated) is the worst of it, I'll definitely be ordering one ASAP now!

Can't wait to join the ride. A rocky start just makes the community stronger in the long run. The next few years being part of this device's evolution will be great fun.

The best thing about it?

HAH! It has my File Archive from the very beginning, whereas the GP32 has to wait three years for :D
