Looks vs strength. bars are weaker then holes, and concentric cirles are even worse then bars, typically having 3-5 points of contact with the rest of the casing. From a sound point circles would be better to.

Metal fingers, and slides are part of the patent issue, having a "storage space" and a USB cable connected keyboard isn't a design I've ever seen, and i agree, its not a optimal way to do it. But it should fall under "obvious uses" and as such not even be a valid patent if patented.
