I was just curious can games/applications on the openpandora can they be stored and started from a usb thumbdrive.

As far as I'm aware, that should be possible. However, there are two SDHC Card slots built into the device, which would strike me as a much more convenient place for storing your files. ;)

Yes, there should be nothing stopping you from putting PND files (or even unpackaged applications) on a USB thumbdrive. It won't autodetect and put icons on the desktop like it would with the SD cards because it's configured to look in specific places, namely the SD cards, but you should still be able to open the thumb drive in a file browser and start them manually. I think Skeezix said PND file associations was working, though he may have said someone would have to work on it. eh, it's theoretically possible, even if it doesn't work right away, it'll work eventually.

Well a usb thumbdrive would be more convenient because I don't have a card reader on my computer well I was just curious.

The Pandora should function as a card reader. Just plug it in via USB and the SD cards will appear as external drives. At least in theory, that's how it should be able to go. I don't think we've actually seen that part used, so the OS may need some driver tweaks for it to work.
If nothing else you can put them on USB thumbdrives and copy them from there to an SD card right on the Pandora itself, too.

It might be worth investing in an SD-USB adaptor. Mine cost a £1 or something. It just turns an SD card into a thumb drive basically.

There's also the matter of possibly needing a USB hub for using the USB flash-drive if it isn't a USB 2.0 device - I have several that are only USB 1.1, myself. That may dent the convenience of using one.

For more information on the whole USB thing, read this.

I hadn't thought about that. Do you have to plug a USB thumb drive into the on-the-go port, or will it work in the host port too?

Well don't have a card reader but I do have a mini usb cable which can be used with the pandora and put it into slave mode as the wiki says also I'm curious does the pandora come with a mini usb cable.

I guess in theory a usb thumbdrive could work but then again communism works in theory.

Well there are applications that require appdata which requires the pandora file system which requires an sd card I guess it wouldn't be possible maybe a third party patch could fix that.

linuxftw, there's an button labelled "Edit" on each of your posts - it may be better to edit a previous post rather than continually post new ones if you're still the last respondent in a thread. ;)

Yknow the good thing about Linux is everything is pretty configurable and the autmated pnd stuff is probably mostly shell script or at least stuff that can be recompiled. :)

As for hard coded paths in apps, you can probably just use symlinks to redirect stuff, if all this stuff hasn't already even been considered and programmed in already, which seems likely if not now but in the future.

Sorry if this post is a bit scatterbrained, i'm on the iPhone and a bit drugged.

Well way to complicated but then again just about everything in linux is.

Can I ask how that's complicated?

You've asked how to use an alternative, non-internal storage method on a unit that has two slots for very standard, very common memory cards. ;) Suggesting that you set up something which is, on a basic level, somewhat analogous to creating a shortcut to a program in Microsoft Windows hardly strikes me as complicated.

The PND system is smart enough to put the appdata on the "drive" it is being run from, regardless of which filesystem it is.

I'm sure you could probably get the PND system to detect .pnd files on a USB stick too. I'm just going to stick to SD cards really for the Pandora. Of course it's nice to be able to use a USB pen drive if you like though.

I personally wouldn't do that. I have the horrible mental image of accidentally banging the end of my pandora while using a PND on my USB pendrive... and breaking both it and my Pandy's USB port.

*shudder*
