WinXP detects that the device is plugged in, but in the
hardware manager, it states: This device cannot start.

(are there drivers somewhere that I am missing?)

Try disabling USB 2.0 support on the used USB port. Many people got it to work this way.

Of course the speed is lousy, and it´s still uncertain if it´ll work at all, so you better buy a card reader.

The USB support is of all the shitty gp2x flaws the shittiest, IMO.

By far the best advice you'll ever get. Buy a cheap card reader and you won't be sorry. It's the best thing I've ever done since I've got my GP32 and GP2x!!!!!!!!!! I don't even know where my PC link cables are anymore, LOL, H.G.

Well I just put my newly acquired GP2X into a usb1.1 port as stated here and Windows XP reports the device installed and is working properly... but it won't give it a drive letter. Wonderful.

I plugged it into my main PC, and problems as described before ('the device cannot start'). So I click troubleshoot.... and get a screen full of nothing. That's windows help for you.

So, plug it into my laptop running Linux.... and the device detects, mounts and talks to the device with no problems. Great, but linux doesn't have zip support, which I need right now.

EDIT: I'd love to know how to disconnect the device when using Linux without the damn thing wiping out some of what I just transferred.

My card reader's on the way, but until then I'm pretty much stuffed no matter which way I turn.

If it were that easy I wouldn't mention it here.
I try to unmount, the GP2X locks up and it appears like it is refusing to unmount.
I next time I wait a few extra seconds, and it appears to have unmounted successfully - but the GP2X still locks up. And when I view whats in the folder, none of the files I just transferred are there.

This USB hook up with the GP2X is pathetic. Basically, until my car reader arrives I really can't do anything with my GP2X.

EDIT: just transferred a whole stack of files, waited about a minute before unmounting then unplugged from the USB port. This time the GP2X didn't lock up and all the files were still there. So hopefully I've solved that problem. Still need a cardreader though. Transferring files back and forth on a USB drive betwqeen my Windows & Linux PCs is ridicolous.

Whatever, rant over (for now at least).

Hmm - the "USB 1.0" vs "USB 2.0" thing makes sense. I have been able to connect my GP2X to my laptop, which only has USB 1.0. My home PC, which has USB 2.0 never connects.
I got sick of that and bought a $14 card reader, which works perfectly. Gamepark Holdings should give everyone a $14 voucher when selling the GP2X, or offer a free card reader - at least until they get USB working decently. :)
And by the way - the GP2x, connected to my laptop, transfers way slower than the card reader connected to the same interface.

Disconnect by pressing a button on the GP2X (it says which one to use on the GP2x screen) before unmounting. When I unmount first the unit always freezes.

More like $10 if you shop around ... it may sound flippant, but it really is so much easier to use a card reader.
