I find american politics very corrupt, not on a global scale but on a western world scale. I think the UK has a much more fair system.

Yes you're correct, the american politics is quite corrupt, (you need enormous financial backing to even stand for a chance)

But the UK does not have the best electoral system by a long way. We have the FPTP system (First Past The Post) which is simple, but alot of votes are wasted.

There are lots of systems that incorporate a mixture of Proportional Representation AND FPTP which would represent the voting public a lot more.

For example, the additional Member System (AMV) which seems to be working just fine in Germany, Wales, and Scotland.

Sorry to thread hijack!

No just more than half of America is stupid. The other roughly 40% of America hates Bush.

I wouldn't want any form of proportional representation in the UK, that would give the UK Independence Part and the British National Party seats - a horrifying thought indeed.

It's considerably less horrifying than you might expect.

Yeah, the Jenkins commission thought up a new hybrid system called AV+, which does look pretty nice.

Giving UKIP seats wouldn't really harm anyone as they aren't the far right organisation you would think them to be, at least not in theory. They are rather considerably Conservitive on the whole that said.

The BNP having a few seats wouldn't really make that much difference either, it's not like MP's have alot of power. The Front National Mayor in France does actually have quite a bit of power and can create hell for the ethnic residents.

Off Topic: Has anyone been checking the BNP's website lately? It's fantastically full of propaganda. Murder! Net Terrorism! Evil Jews!

Not any form of proportional Representation?

It also keeps out the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party.

If it lets parties in, thats because the party is getting votes, thus giving a more actual representation of the voting public.

If a whole nation were racists, you might expect the rascist political parties in power, would you not?

It's more frightening there are voting rascists, is it not?

Kerry isn't really going to be that much better in all honesty and he looked just as bad in the debate, but hes the closest to snatching the presidancey than anyone else is i believe.

You honestly think Kerry look as bad as Bush in the debate? I though Kerry did a much better job; he was more composed, spoke better and was quicker to respond. I think Kerry would make an infinately better leader than "Dubya" and I feel he surpasses bush in almost every aspect.
I fail to see why so many will vote for him. The fact of the matter is, he's an international joke who is thrusting America's head under water. I don't respect him as a leader and I would never fight for him. Obviously my votes for Kerry, but I am under the assumption that Bush will win. Perhaps this is whats fuelling my perpetual imbitterment towards the leader of my country. Damn him.

Lib Dems get plenty of sets, they have the one where I live for starters. I don't really care about the Green party, do they even have any proper policies?

Getting a seat gives parties like the BNP a foothold, if the circumstances in this country were to change for any reason it could allow their popularity to increase a la Germany in the 1930s.

Also the very thought of that twat Kilroy Silk beoming an MP makes me sick.

1)Not enough seats to be in for a chance for leadership until the electoral system is changed.

2) Then why does it work in other countries? Why aren't Nazi Parties springing up all over the place? In Ireland? Wales? Scotland? Germany? Malta? If their popularity increases, then something is wrong with our current parties. Wiemar Germany only went tits up because of major debt problems the allies inflicted on them and a great depression.
Extremist Parties only get power if people vote for them.
Basically, if the majority of the people vote for a party, why not let the party in power? They deserve it, don't they?

I'm surprised that so many Europeans are openly willing to discuss the US elections, even though it doesn't directly concern them. For myself, I greatly prefer Kerry over Bush... I value intelligence over charisma. Though I dont really see Bush as charismatic anyway... he speaks slowly, has a hard time getting his point across, sucked at the debates, and he looks like a fool...

Gore shouldve won the last election... he had the popular vote for pete's sake, MORE PEOPLE voted for HIM. The electoral college system is corrupt and archaic <_<

A UK newspaper called the Guardian had an awful idea of getting it's readers to write to undecided voters in Ohio to try to convince them to vote for Kerry (I think this is an awful idea as I know I would be pissed off if someone from another country wrote to me about my vote in my country).

Anyway, the Guardian have taken the brave step of publishing some of the replies and you can read them here. Some of them are fairly frank and often funny in their abuse and contempt for liberal limeys meddling in their affairs.

Even with proportional representation Lib Dems would have no chance of winning.

As I said if something major went wrong in this country some people could look to extremist parties, this is more likely if they already have a small power base. It may be very unlikely, I doubt anyone is going to impose massive reparations upon us, but who knows what the future holds.

In general it sounds good but I think it's flawed. Loads of different parties would be represented in the Commons, that's bound to lead to more bickering and the whole process will be slowed. I bet rediculous parties would be launched, probably backed by students and the internet - it would be like the "Jedi" religion appearing on thousands of census forms...
