Is unmounting sd cards or other external drives working for anyone else? I always get an error when trying to unmount. So, generally i have to power down and eject to avoid data loss which is kind of annoying.

If memory serves, this is a known issue, and it currently affects everybody. I'm pretty sure it's on their to-do list. :)

I have just been ejecting the SD cards on the Pandora. Could this cause a problem? I don't do this on my Windows computer, though. Is there a unmount icon I'm missing on XFCE that I should be pressing before removing SD cards?

That is generally no problem with FAT formateed drives, but one day you are going to be faster then your computers writecache and end up with only half your data.

Linux really hates dirty (not unmounted) NTFS drives
