@pandora team .. dare to add a "Time Remaining Counter" on pandora web site?
XX days, Xh XXm

(sorry about the poll .. don't know why is there..)

[31/7/08 - Tried to get rid of the poll - Tobriand]

Quite simply, they don't know when it is going to be released. Thats why when everyone asks, nobody has a clear answer. Maybe once preorders start and the batch is simply counting down to ship date.

well .. that "they don't know when it is going to be released" .. we really can't talk about that anymore .. the product itself was planned for august
they do have a clue and they know better when it will be ready..

Do you knpw something we don't?

What's the actual rease date then?

Don't know? Then you can't count down to an unknown date.

Silly suggestion

Countdowns are for big companies spinning big hype. Usually their product has been complete for some time, but numerous factors (usually to do with marketing) keep it out of consumer hands until the time is right.

Pandora isn't that kind of release. There is no false hype, no waiting for the right time of the fiscal year, no greedy cross marketing strategy, no global media partnerships to negotiate, and no competing products to factor in to the timing. When the first batch of Pandoras are manufactured, we're allowed to buy them straight away. Can't ask for much more than that.

The original estimate was for April/May. With any complex manufacturing project, things come up that you have no control over. There were setbacks with the analog pads, wifi chips, usb controller, etc. The first big batch of dev boards was destroyed in shipping, and that set all software development back by at least a month.

As things stand now, everybody is hopeful for an Aug. release. It is entirely possible that that will happen, but it is equally possible that some other unforeseeable issue could come up and delay things further. Nobody in a position to know better has ever given a set date for release.

Imagine the grief from this forum if they did announce a set date and something else prevented them from meeting that date. As Gruso says, big companies announce dates when they already have the thing ready. This is not a big company. Pandora devs presumably aren't yet in a position to announce it.

plan on it taking 8 months, with the possibility of it being less.
Actually, given the past circumstances with this thing, that may actually be a practical statement, unfortunately. :(

How about we hold hands in a circle and sing Kum Bay Yah? That'll show those evil, money-grubbing corporate fat-cats!

From my perspective, they've been doing really well in terms of their dates. The setbacks have all been things beyond their control (from what I've seen and heard), and the actual development seems to be moving as fast as they planned.

Compare the progress here to some devices like the original OQO and Flipstart PC, which I started following well before either of those were a reality. It took the OQO about a year after I started reading about it to start shipping, and I think the Flipstart was two or three years. And those devices were both a 'pre-order' or 'shipping soon' situation for most of that time. This project is a lot more straight forward in terms of when we should expect to see things.

The Pandora has never had a release date officially set and hence it has not been late once (contrary to all the many impatient new members beliefs').

Edit: People just need to understand that these things really do take a lot of time and work to reach fruition.

They should probably close this thread, since you can't have a countdown to a time that you are unaware of...what is it supposed to show? A question mark?
It should show more than A question mark. :p

THIS PREDICTION WILL ALWAYS BE ACCURATE: The Pandora will be released in a month. :p
It's really once you understand the fact that the Pandora release date is actually an asymptote.
