I'll post more here as I have more to post, but I'm looking for something to convert
my DVD(Vob) files into DIVX. (Just got my GP2X a few days ago)
I've tried a number of programs, and have had varying results...
Nothing that is a sure thing.... I'll list (and keep updated) on what I've been able
to come up with.
My goals I'm shooting for is to:
1) Have smooth playing video for 4:3
2) Have smooth playing video for 16:9
3) Have the sound and video perfectly synced
4) Would like to use high compression to keep file size small, or low bitrates,
but this is minor compared to having the above 3 work flawlessly.

If you've mastered this technique, or played around with some
conversion programs to play on your GP2X, please share your findings! :)

UPDATE: Wow, I just read one of the stickys above and PocketDivXEncoder 0.3.6 was
Suggested for conversion. This program did the trick.
I've only converted videos up to 5 min in length so far from VOB files on
my hard drive, but the audio/video sync is dead on, the picture plays smooth
(for 4:3 and 16:9 video). PocketDivXEncoder is a single file that doesn't even have
to install to your computer to use. (This is great!)
You are able to adjust Video Quality, Sound, Brightness, Contast,
and you can crop a portion of your video clip - best of all, ALL OF these options
are all on the main screen and you don't have to search through tons
of menus to find these settings (if you want to tweak them).

This program may be old news, but incase you haven't done much with the VIDEO
on the GP2X and want to dabble with it, this program is a great converter. (atleast
for VOB files - ripped from a DVD)

...I'm going to go try to convert an entire episode of something (scrubs, seinfeld... etc)
and will let you know if there are any issues with sound syncing in a file of that size.

SimpleDivX 1.4 - (Gave up on this program once I used PocketDivXEncoder)
DVDx 2.3 - (Gave up on this program once I used PocketDivXEncoder)

i use SUPER http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html for pretty much everything. its like the VLC of video converters (does everything)
I tried it for a few minutes... looked as if it did alot.
I had some kind of issue with the playback of the conversion...but can't remember
what it was (since I loaded on about 10 different converters in the last week)
but I love the way you can just point to your vob file with PocketDivXEncoder, and click encode.. and whala.. its done.
No having to mess around with any settings.

I use DVD Shrink to rip and AutoGK to encode. I think they're really easy to use, but they have limited features. All I need to do is encode them though.

I encode them to 100mb (320*240) and they look fine on my monitor (if I sit back) and I re-encode them to 50mb for my GP2X, they look fine on the smaller screen.

Ho long do your programs take? AutoGK takes around 40mins each (VOB to AVI) with my Athlon XP 2000+ and 256mb RAM.

How much video are you talking about? 15min? 30min? 1hr? 2hrs?

Just incase you are wondering, I can
rip a 21 Minute episode of Scrubs using DVD SHRINK
and then convert it to a DIVX file in PocketDivXEncoder
with the following settings:

I make the video 512x384 in PocketDivXEncoder
(which is the default that it sets the output to)
with the bitrate at 1200.

Conversion to the .avi file takes 16min.
on a WinXP machine I have with 1GB of ram and lots of hard disk open.

I dont know if shrinking the video helps the time or not.
I know I did shrink it to 340x240 and it still looked awesome.

...okay, I just reencoded at 344x258 and at 1200 for the bitrate.
disk space was the same, but encoding took only 11min vs. 16 that it took before.

The best resolution is 320x(whatever keeps the video in scale, usually 240 if 4:3) if you are going to encode videos just for the GP2X. This dramtically reduces the filesize/processing time, and you are not losing much quality because the GP2X has to downsize to that anyway...
