The infamous USB port!!

Skop: I don't know why but somewhere at the very root of your USB drivers things are already going wrong. Forget finding the right drivers at this point, you have some other restoring to do first.

I'd recommend going here first, and follow the advice. This should get your machine's USB-hardware in working order again.

After that come back here and we'll figure the GP-thing out :)

Well, got the windows98 disk, installed the drivers from the disk, and still the same problem. nothing changed. (did it twice just to make sure).

**just a bit of trivia, in 'control panel', in 'add new hardware', when it searchs for plug and play devices on my system, it comes up with a list under 'is the device you want to install listed below?' there are (yes you've guessed it):

USB Root Hub (yellow and black exclamation mark)
USB Root Hub (yellow and black exclamation mark)

A link perhaps?

I guess my only option now is to reinstall my operating system, or upgrade the operating system to XP.

I still haven't got this working since 25th December!!!

I would just install Win98 again over the top of your current version, ok so it's a bit tedious and messy, but at least you can keep you're files. Then you'll have fully working USB ports and the only thing you'll have to worry about is changing you're wallpaper back from the win98 default.

A Smart media card reader will help you out. I have problems with the USB connection and really don't want to reinstall Windows/Linux just yet. They cost £10 and save you a LOT of hassle. E.g. you can chop and change files a million times quicker than crappy USB PClink.

HAHAHA.....

dammit i got a gp32 today and i unfortunately have EXACTLY the same problem as you do so if you ever fix it tell me what you did as i've been on the computer for over 4 hours now and still havent managed to get further than you have getting it to work.....
However there is no way i want to spend 1 month like this

maybe its www.gbax.com at fault as i also got it from them....
where do u download the windows 98 version of the gp32 usb thing from?
(i don't even know my username and password- unless its on the receit or something)

You choose your own username and password when you register. All you need is to transfer the pduid from the gp32 upto the website with the appropriate utility (or use something like gps2 and irc).

Got two GP32's from Gbax, and both work perfect (inc usb), so it's not a problem with there stock.

well it just tried doing a clean install of windows and it still doesn't work:
and says

the NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (code 2)

maybe its hardware related- something that both skop and i have and doesn't work wiht gp32, luckily i havenet mucked up my usb ports so i should be able to get a smart media card reader, but then what if it turns out that my gp32 is cxtually broken, then what?

god its late

Okay Skop, now at least Windows is telling you what hardware you have again (even if it is not installed properly) before these root hubs didn't even show anymore, right?

If I remember correctly you have a VIA chipset and USB, could be you have to install the VIA drivers again (these should be on the CD that comes with your motherboard, info should be in the book that comes with your motherboard)

Or (Again from the MS boys): Check Device Manager to be certain that the root hub is functioning correctly. If the root hub is displayed with an exclamation point in a yellow circle, verify that the BIOS is assigning an interrupt request (IRQ) to the root USB controller. This is required for the device driver to be loaded.

how do i verify that the BIOS is assigning a interupt request to the root USB controller?

YES. it did work normally before. Me and my brother linked up digital camera and minidisk player all the time. Lost digital camera (only a wee little one) and lost usb connecter for the minidisk player.

Because I can't test it (with only the gp32 at the moment) I assume that because the drivers are not functioning properly for the USB Root Hub's (at the back of the computer) the normal usb's (at the front of the computer) won't work either. I have been testing it for both.
Normal usbs are apparently functioning properly (says properties) but USB Root Hubs are not.

Raven, if you go to the gp32 gathering and i manage to go, you deserve a good handshake my friend!

If it functioned properly before that means the problems are not in the BIOS settings (unless you changed them, but since you don't know where to check, I assume you didn't) it also means you do not need to install newer drivers now.

You probably just need to reinstall the USB drivers that came with your computer (should be on the motherboard cd-rom) if after that you can't install the GamePark we'll see about that - but for now, first things first.

How do you do that? My reinstall disk wipes everything. How do you reinstall windows98 without wiping everything.
Do you use a windows98 cd-rom?

If you have a rescue/reinstall cd you probably do not have any driver cd's either (they always put everything on one disk without giving you seperate drivers) that is not going to make it easier to install your USB drivers.

You are going to need the VIA drivers but you will have to know what type of USB you have (USB1 or USB2), do you know anything about the hardware in your pc? It would really help if you know what motherboard you have but basicly any information about your system will help.

You could download Sisoft Sandra and use it to identify your motherboard. Once you know that it's just downloading and installing drivers and everything *should* work again.

okey doke.

have downloaded siSoftware sandra.

Mainboard information.....

manufacturer Compaq
MP Support No
Model 0648h
Version None
Serial number None

<_<

Chipset you say?

Chipset 1
Model: VIA Technologies Inc VT8501 Apollo MVP4 System Controller
Bus(es): ISA AGP PCI USB i2c/SMBus
L2 External Cache: 512 kB Pipeline -Burst White- Thru
Front Side Bus Speed: 1 x 97MHz (97MHz data rate)
Maximum FSB Speed / max memory Speed: 1 x 100 MHz / 1x 100MHz
Width: 64-bit

make of that what you will.....

Well that really helped (not). We already knew you had a VIA chipset but basicly Windows should have found and automaticly installed your USB devices. According to VIA your USB devices should be fully supported in the MS operating system and they don't offer a seperate download. (just patches, and a driver for USB 2)

I am afraid the installation of the GamePark drivers (which might have been the wrong version) has somehow messed with/overwritten the already installed USB components, the MS solution for this problem (they recognise the problem, just don't offer a solution) seems to be reinstalling, but that's a crappy job if you only have a restore disk which simply deletes everything (thanks Compaq)

Normal usbs are apparently functioning properly (says properties) but USB Root Hubs are not.
Could you tell me what 'normal USB's' are functioning properly (full list of all USB devices and their status). It still could be that one of these 'normal USB's' is not recognised properly and changing could get your roothubs back in working condition (but to be honest I'm not very hopefull at this point, only want to check because I know you do not want to reinstall everything)

Oh, and one more thing you could try:MS Support again.

Could you tell me what 'normal USB's' are functioning properly (full list of all USB devices and their status).

By 'normal usb's' i mean NOT the USB root hubs.

In Device manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers:

- USB Root Hub **device status - The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (code 2) **

- USB Root Hub **device status - The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (code 2) **

- VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller **device status- This device is working properly**

- VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller **device status- This device is working properly**
