Release Switch GUI: Openbox

I was a bit lazy when creating my PND - it only contains one 'openbox' ipk, but that ipk contains software from different sources. The full list is:

openbox and obxprop http://openbox.org

openbox-menu http://mimasgpc.free...ox-menu_en.html

menu-cache http://sourceforge.n...nu-cache 0.4.1/

stalonetray http://stalonetray.sourceforge.net/

gtk change theme http://plasmasturm.o...de/gtk-chtheme/

wbar http://code.google.com/p/wbar/

xprop (strangely difficult to get, is attached to this post)

obconf git clone git://git.openbox.org/dana/obconf obconf

gtk-engines http://ftp.gnome.org...-2.20.2.tar.bz2

The essential extra stuff is openbox-menu and menu-cache for the PNDs menu, and xprop to clean up after switching from XFCE or Minimenu.

Thanks for version 3.

It's really usable now.

I'm still looking forward to see some easy to toggle warlock/task bar which shows running programs.

(You already told you will try to do make it working next weekend)

Maybe you could also make an option which sends those programs into the warlock bar on the bottom. Would be nice but I'd also prefer the option of a second (moveable) bar.

Also mass storage devices on the desktop would be nice.

New configuration manager is great, as well as the easy bluetooth toggling.

Very nice update :)

Can't work out how to make warlockbar aware of changes to /media/sdcardname/pandora/apps

None of "reload warlockbar", "reconfigure", "restart" or right-clicking on it seem to work...?

EDIT: scrap that, rebooting did the trick :)

"Reload Warlock Bar" is the one you want - if there's a .desktop file file in $HOME/Desktop then it'll definitely work, if not then it's because you're waiting for pndnotifyd to create one. I don't know if there's any way to give pndnotifyd a kick so it wakes up.

Incidentally, "reconfigure" is to update openbox after manual changes to menu.xml or rc.xml (it's not required if you change things with obconf). "restart" shouldn't be required, but it does force the PNDs menu and Warlock Bar to regenerate (again though, you may still be waiting for pndnotifyd).

Got a problem here:

2/3 of the time the Pandora won't wake up from suspend, I need to reset her then. First I thought it happens only if I leave WLAN toggeld on, but after trying several times it seems not directly related.

Any others experiencing this ?

I've not experienced this. I don't suspend much, but it's always come back when I've tried. There's a few xfce-specific lines in /usr/pandora/scripts/op_power.sh that need fixing to display the "don't remove cards ..." warnings and for lid config, but nothing that would prevent it turning back on. I'll look into to it more if others are having problems too.

Can't confirm this.

Did 10 times suspend mode (with Wifi enabled) and could come back without issues.

Hi, Thanks again,

OpenBox is really great on Pandora.

I still have the system menu problem, have you find a way to correct that ?

I tried to reinstall, but nothing change.

How would I move warlockbar to be vertical?

I tried changing pos = bottom to pos=left, but that doesn't change its orientation.

Also, Could the 'shutdown' option be changed to open a window for either shutdown, logout, lock or cancel?

You also need the -vbar option. All the options are listed here: http://dev.man-online.org/man1/wbar/ - you may need to play with the other ones to make it look good (it looked a bit rubbish when I tried it).

Aaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really? I've tried everything I can think of to fix this. My biggest problem is that I can't recreate it on my Pandora, so it's all been guesswork as to the possible cause. I need more info from users to try to resolve it. Things like:

1) Does it affect you? Does it not affect you?

2) What media are you booting from? (NAND or SD Card)

3) What OS version are you running?

4) What happens if you move your PNDs to another folder (i.e. one that pndnotifyd isn't monitoring), wait for pndnotifyd to update the system with changes (you'll notice the .desktop files disappear from /usr/share/applications) and then restart Openbox? Can you try to add PNDs back to pandora/menu (one at a time ideally), to see if it's one weird PND that causes it?

5) Can you post a copy of the file that appears in /tmp/obcache/menus/ ?

A polite request: can anyone who's tried this Openbox pnd help me fix the system menu bug? I've never seen it, and I don't understand why it happens for some others (or is it everyone?). It's driving me nuts.

Also, Could the 'shutdown' option be changed to open a window for either shutdown, logout, lock or cancel?

Any chance of putting SD mass storage in the root menu?

Yeah - I'll add more updates to this (I was testing out a taskbar for Askurus the other day), but I really want to get to the bottom of the system menu bug first.

I will help you with the system menu bug, as I really love OpenBox.

My pandora is not with me right now, but here is a few responses :

1) affected by system menu bug

2) I'm boot from NAND

3) My OS version is the last SuperSaxxon 1.52

I'll send you more information on points 4) and 5) as soon as I can put my hands on my pandora

I also have a suggestion, please add tint2 in the PND : http://code.google.com/p/tint2/

Here a copy/paste from the webpage :

tint2 is a simple
panel/taskbar unintrusive and light (memory / cpu / aestetic).

We follow freedesktop specifications.

0.11 features

  • panel with taskbar, systray, clock and battery status
  • easy to customize : color/transparency on font, icon, border and background
  • pager like capability : send task from one workspace to another, switch workspace
  • multi-monitor capability : one panel per monitor, show task from current monitor
  • customize mouse event
  • window manager's menu
  • tooltip
  • autohide
  • clock timezones
  • real & fake transparency with autodetection of composite manager
  • panel's theme switcher 'tint2conf'

Hi,

System Menu Bug Solved ! Can someone test and confirm that ?

On my setup, all pnd were in menu directory, I moved all pnd to a tmp dir, then perfom these actions for each PND :

- move the Pnd in menu folder

- restart OpenBox

- test the system menu

CodecPack.pnd is the faulty that mess up the system menu, move it to a non pandora directory, restartOpenBox, then enjoy !

I don't know why but after moving all my pnd to menu directory except CodecPack.pnd everything is fine.

I moved codecpack.pnd, and after rebooting, the menu was fixed :)

Much sleeker than xfce. Faster too.

Thanks Freamon!

Brilliant. I thought it may be a particular PND that was causing it, and downloaded pretty much every System PND from the repo to try and test it, but I never thought of the CodecPack. Since I finally got the bug after I downloaded the Codec Pack, it seems conclusive that your solution should work for everyone.

I've no idea why it breaks the menu incidentally - the pnd has a very old-style PXML, but I can't see what difference it makes. Since the PND can be deleted after it's run, and its contents are a bit out of date, I'm not going to worry about it too much.

Thank you for your efforts with this. I'll go and have a look at tint2 (Openbox + tint2 seems a popular combination on other distros).

Ah, great.

The CodecPack caused a problem?

I always had it on my SD and didn't have any Problems.
