just wondering has anyone considered a softphone for the caanoo i duno if its posible but it definatly be awsome

when Skype announced it may be opened for developers, I filled the request form, it would be amazing to port Skype to Caanoo, but I have no answer so far :(

Yeah, I read that Skype was working on an open source version for Linux. Who knows when that will be released though!

How about this, http://ekiga.org/download-ekiga-binaries-or-source-code or http://trac.qutecom.org/wiki

Ekiga looks like the better choice as it uses two different protocols, SIP and H.323. Qutecom uses SIP and Skype is proprietary.

In any case, Voip on the Caanoo would be very cool indeed!

i've never seen ekiga from close, I only know the Skype API a little (and I can tell you, it's horrible :D)
to be honest i don't consider this a high priority feature. if you have wifi, you usually can use a computer for voip. of course it could be useful at fast food restaurants, etc. I personally use skype on my Android phone to call landline phones (much cheaper than the provider's rate), that's why I think that would be the better solution

we'll see... :)

The only problem is the TERRIBLE delay and sound quality of both Skype and Google Talk.

use a better network connection :p
I use Skype frequently for calling phones when i'm in foreign lands, and I very rarely have problems (in fact, I experienced it only once, but I guess it was because the hotel's network was overloaded because of the f*cking torrent downloads)

I tried to call a friend who is 2Km away, and we had a 4-second delay and he could hardly hear me. I guess it's because of excess network traffic on both sides... and when I call a real phone, it's just as bad.
