I seem to remeber a while back when i was much cleverer and into small computer boards a guide for surface mounting it was for upgrading the ram on a old Handheld cant remeber the name though.

Basically you remove the old chip make sure the board connections are clean then you just place the new chip in position put a stripe of solder fluid/paste along the legs and heat it up in an oven at certain temp and the fluid will run into the relevant connections giving you a clean connection.

Now what i want to know is the proper name for this stuff.

Anyone know?

Sounds almost too good to be true. I know of the procedure, you basically take a syringe, squirt some of the stuff on each pad (or run a long line along the pads, the tin will form bubbles on the pads). But, like I said, sounds almost too good to be true, it is. You need a special oven to do it, and you need the stuff in the syringe. Also, you're going to need to check most of the ICs (aka chips) for heat tolerance. Some of the chips may not survive the heat needed to turn the stuff into tin. I've only used this once, when I went to check out a university and it's dead easy, if it works and if you have the stuff...

Yeah i know my main worry is melting my GP32  but the oven is basic toaster oven with temperature controls on it.

Anyway i am starting to pick up the old links and information i am just trying to get in contact with one of the guys who have done this.

There are other methods i particulary like the "wipe" method as it is easier and i dont have to worry about getting specialised equipment.

I am going to start practising on my old pcb's so i get the hang of it again.
