smc is not that common anymore, but you can fidn it evryware arround the web, and it is CHEAP, arround 25eur if you find a cheap shop

im a bit worryed that the gp32 uses this old style storage , how old is the gp32?

Steve

The GP32 is a couple years old... 2002, I believe.

The media really isn't that hard to find. Yes, it is on its way out as far as new hardware utilizing it, but there are still millions of people still using older hardware that needs SMC.

The SMC media should be around for at least a couple more years. There's really no reason to worry

huh? In Germany they are very common. You get them in Supermarkets (Wal*Mart) and in every photoshop. Also many electronic shops cary them, and Internetshops, too.

I seem to remember that MMCs also work with the GP32 up to 128mb, and those are less rare than SMCs are. I have not tested this however; my only evidence is anecdotal... if SMCs do become unbuyable, though, there's a decent chance I'll try MMCs sooner or later.

it beats http://www.gbax.com/new/gp32.html at £24.99 , iam very close to buying one of these gp32's now but iam slightly unsure as i read in another post that a GP32 2 was coming out next year sometime , i cant keep affording to buy more models thats why i quit the consoles (gp32 isent exactly a console as such) at the moment i dont think there is much call for a gp32 2 - why cant this current one be devloped on first and games made for it? (you know what i mean) ....

Its old and is no longer supported by newer devices who have moved on to Compact Flash and other formats of flash memory.

Compactflash came out at more or less the same time as SMC, and is itself being superseded by XD, MMC, SD and the like. SMC never gained the total market hold becasue it was considered too flimsy for rough use...

The GP32 can be called a commercial flop as in there are no commercial developers willing to spend the time and money developing titles for it. The only thing that has stopped it from being a complete flop is the homebrew scene which has made emulators etc.

So was Gamepark are trying to do now is come up with another handheld device that commercial developers want to spend time and money on. However, I think they have got a tough time ahead. Look at the Zodiac for example - it's being kept afloat by PalmOS titles, although there are a few emulators for it now (homebrew and commercial) as well as some commercial games. The manufacturer doesn't seem scared of throwing money at it however to try and get more people interested, but they'll still not be able to compete with the big boys, and I think the UK launch will sell units simply because of the PDA functionality. However, I do think PocketPC's are gradually taking over in the way of PDA's.
