Why can't you use a picture on your hard-drive as a signature? "C:MyDocuments/pictures etc.."
Why if you want to use a picture you need to link it to a webpage, for image hosting?

Can this feature be added, or is there a technical difficulty that makes it impossible?

Quite simple.. it saps the bandwidth resources of the forum server if we can upload them as it stores them there and every time the picture is accessed/viewed bandwdith is taken up.... hence the links needed.

Why do you say rubbish? :)

Skop : Go in "My Controls" -> "Edit Avatar Settings" (on right bottom) and click on "Upload a new image from your computer". :)

No, you can't link to a picture on your harddrive because it's just that ON YOUR HARDDRIVE. How would you expect people to be able to see an image that is sitting on your harddrive when it is not posted on the internet. In order for people to acess any file it must be hosted on a webserver of some sort. Go to google and look up the definition of a webserver and learn a little bit about how the internet works.

You can of course install a webserver and thus use a picture on your harddrive. ;)

In theory, yes, but the Static Ip limitation can be worked around using Dynamic DNS ( www.dyndns.com ). But don't even consider using it if you have no idea what you need it for.

It allows your PC to be referred to as mypc.kicks-ass.net or something, but on top of that you need to have a server of some description running (being an ftp, http, or even TeamSpeak server - all of which I've used without issue).

You could run a webserver off your local computer, and link to those images.
thats what ive done :)
its realy nice to have your website on your own pc, and when not many people acces it a normal dsl upstream is good enugh for it, and uptime is like 90%

How do you install a webserver or create one and what software would you need?
If that is possible of course.
A webserver for sig pics is overkill ;) It's much simpler to find a free hoster that allows hotlinks (10min) than put up your own webserver (2-3hours the first time). And if you have a slow internet connection, (here in germany, DSL isn't near fast enough for me to host pics, a 300x300 JPG takes 15-20secs to load) it will be slooooooooow.

Even though it would be nice if microsoft built in a server into Windows so you can do something like yourUN.microsoftfiles.com/getfile.asp&path="C:\bla\My Pictures\thapic.jpg" to show something on your HD (nice for anyone who wants to hack into your computer, of course :D)

Your avatar is not on your hard drive but here : http://www.gp32x.de/board/uploads/av-1879.gif

Because you uploaded it on the GP32x server before viewing it in the board. ;)
