For xmas, I am probably going to get an ipod video. That is good, becuase, (a) i love music, ALL of my music, so the harddrive gives me (practicly) infinite storage (B ) i can also play video and again I have no need for expensive SD cards since I have 30 gb of space. But being a tech and video game afficienado, and beauces it uses linux, i am intrigued. is its game and emulation ability worth the prce tag since I have no real need for it play vdieo and audio? please give me an honest unbiased nonfanboy opinion.

(note: I am just happy with the iPod line of products, so please no "IPOD SUX!!!!!1")

Hi Thomas!
I have a GP32 (and in a few hours hopefully a GP2X, too...) and from it's emulators I just can say: It's fucking amazing!! It has ALL important 8-bit systems from the 80ies running at fullspeed and even Genesis and SNES emus which are quite usable. Since the GP2X is more powerful, we'll see fullspeed Genesis and SNES emus in the future. From my point of view, you should wait a half year or so, till more elaborated emus for the GP2X come out. Now it's just a geek thing and unless you want to watch video or hear music or code something for yourself, it's pretty useless... (don't slap me! I'm just honest.)
But I like the idea to have FREE software and if something bothers me, I bug the coder as long as he fixes that and that's something I couldn't do with the Apple-programmer, so I got my GP2X... :)

If you only want classic games and not snes+ i would sugest you getting a gp32, i realy dislike the gp2x stick for 2d games, but that may change.

Yeah I am stoked with my GP32 Blu+, it can do some awesome emulation and it has an amazing screen (people always comment on it). DrMD especially is excellent and has many games that were also on the Amiga, and the PCEngine emulator is a gem for great shooters you've never seen before ;)

Then there's the hundreds of excellent files available on the GP32x.de archive, GP32 is still a very good buy even in these days of PSP and GP2X.

Could be hard to find at the moment though, seems like people are still holding onto them given recent hiccups in the GP2X release.

Go GP32! :)

I'd wait for a bit. See what games and wha emu's get released for it.

If games/systems get released that you want to play, buy one.

I'm sure you'll end up with one eventually, I just wouldn't rush if you already have video/mp3 and are happy with that.

<fanboy> but the GP2X is a very cool gadget, its worth it for the 'leetness' factor seeing all the people looking at it and wondering what you are playing with </fanboy>

By the way Brew, when's the next GPBrew mag release?

I'd wait at least until January if you want a more "perfected" version of the GP2X, with much better firmware, and possibly more add-ons, like wireless or network cable play.

Hmm, at this time of night, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. Also my time has been pretty much occupied with some seriously disturbing everyday stuff

So, I'll leave this to the appropriate thread, or PM. Thanks.

Please don't start rumors like that. There will be no hardware design changes. GPH would shoot itself in the foot and cause a thousand first edition returns.

Short answer: No, but it will be in the not too distant future.

Longer answer:

If you want to be around when stuff comes out and get the buzz from that, then yes. Bear in mind, that includes stuff coming out that fixes the bugs you swore about about an hour after first turning the machine on.

If you want handheld emulation now, then GP32 or PSP are probably the way to go (though I don't know much about how homebrew on the PSP works, and of course, its a LOT more pricey). The GP32 has excellent emulation and homebrew games, especially for a system of its caliber - and if 8 bit especially are the machines you want then it is ideal.

If you want handheld emulation, but not the bugs or a long while without much that come with the start of the system, but are prepared to wait a few months before it starts to appear, then get the GP2x a little way down the line.

Oh, and also bear in mind the 2x has TV-out, which as far as I know the i-pod video doesn't have... so if you're after an easy way to take video files to a friend's house and watch them on his TV then the 2x *will* be (for now) the way to go.

Its worse then the GP32 one even!
That does not sound good...

I have heard the way it works is the stick can only click in 8 directions, its not a true joystick- would a mod to install a d-pad in its place not be possible? Something like the mega drive one...

worse than the gp32 one? that doesn't account for much. The gp32 d pad was one of the best ever ever ever.

GP32 d pad?
I don't know which version you had though mine had some horrible little control stick, it was the worst thing about the console. Totally unneeded for the kind of games on the GP32.

I'm opting to get a GP32 rather than waiting a while for a GP2X, my minds made up.

Both look like quality consoles though and i can't wait to get mine.

You sure you're thinking of the right console? The only things (arguably) bad about the gp32's stick were the clickyness and the tendency for the stick to go weird after a couple of years - less if unlucky, more if not (easily fixable with some paper and blu-tack).

The only stick better than the GP32's at the time imho was the NGP( c )'s. The GP2x's stick feels good imo, although it does take a little getting used to; and I haven't been playing quake yet.

EDIT: Stupid board thinking I mean © when I didn't
